The DevOps Engineering team at Medium is responsible for the systems and procedures involved in the stable operation of the Medium platform. We are committed to implementing the best aspects of DevOps philosophy. Working closely with Engineering, the DevOps Engineering team creates and maintains the tools used for provisioning services and running releases, as well as the playbooks used to respond to production incidents. Unlike traditional Technical Operations teams, instead of being first responders we fill an escalation role in support of a primary on call rotation staffed by members of the larger Engineering team. Collectively we believe this achieves an important feedback function for Medium Engineering. The DevOps Engineering team also takes very seriously a corresponding responsibility to make sure that alerts are triggered for all, and only for, actionable events requiring the intervention of an engineer. Wherever possible we use automation to keep production alerts to a minimum. Some of the traits we value for the DevOps Engineer role include curiosity, thoroughness and thoughtfulness. Experience operating a user-facing internet service is helpful, as well as familiarity with Cloud services such as AWS. Having on call experience will encourage the empathy we value in supporting the primary on call rotation. Traditional system administration and scripting skills are also valuable. We understand the value of diverse backgrounds and respect the healthy expression of diverse opinions. We embrace experimentation and the examination of all kinds of ideas through reasoning and testing. Medium is an equal opportunity employer. Learn more about Medium the company here.
