In my opinion, good option might be testing few distributions of Linux as virtual machines beforehand. Distros differ from each other in various aspects and it's hard to answer which will suit you the best. However Arch Linux might not be the best option as first choice. It may be hard to start with, if you don't know what you want to expect from your operating system. I suggest you starting with any more user friendly, general purpose distribution line Arch based Manjaro or Debian based Ubuntu.
