Atom vs boot2docker: What are the differences?

What is Atom? A hackable text editor for the 21st Century. At GitHub, we're building the text editor we've always wanted. A tool you can customize to do anything, but also use productively on the first day without ever touching a config file. Atom is modern, approachable, and hackable to the core. We can't wait to see what you build with it.

What is boot2docker? Lightweight Linux for Docker. boot2docker is a lightweight Linux distribution based on Tiny Core Linux made specifically to run Docker containers. It runs completely from RAM, weighs ~27MB and boots in ~5s (YMMV).

Atom and boot2docker are primarily classified as "Text Editor" and "Virtual Machine Management" tools respectively.

Some of the features offered by Atom are:

  • Atom is a desktop application based on web technologies
  • Node.js integration
  • Modular Design- composed of over 50 open-source packages that integrate around a minimal core

On the other hand, boot2docker provides the following key features:

  • Kernel 3.14.1 with AUFS, Docker 0.10.1, LXC 0.8.0
  • Container persistence via disk automount on /var/lib/docker
  • SSH keys persistence via disk automount

"Free" is the top reason why over 514 developers like Atom, while over 42 developers mention "Lightweight" as the leading cause for choosing boot2docker.

Atom and boot2docker are both open source tools. Atom with 49.3K GitHub stars and 12.1K forks on GitHub appears to be more popular than boot2docker with 7.99K GitHub stars and 1.14K GitHub forks.

According to the StackShare community, Atom has a broader approval, being mentioned in 836 company stacks & 725 developers stacks; compared to boot2docker, which is listed in 70 company stacks and 30 developer stacks.

Since communication with Github is not necessary, the Atom is less convenient in working with text and code. Sublim's support and understanding of projects is best for us. Notepad for us is a completely outdated solution with an unacceptable interface. We use a good theme for Sublim ayu-dark
