IonDB vs BigchainDB: What are the differences?

What is IonDB? A key-value store for microcontroller and IoT applications. Currently in the Arduino world, there doesn't exist an associative array or map implementation that is both easy to use and performance competitive. There also is little support for disk based storage options that don't involve writing it yourself. IonDB is fast, functional, and offers disk based storage out of the box.

What is BigchainDB? A database with blockchain characteristics. It is designed to merge the best of two worlds: the ‚Äútraditional‚ÄĚ distributed database world and the ‚Äútraditional‚ÄĚ blockchain world. With high throughput, low latency, powerful query functionality, decentralized control, immutable data storage and built-in asset support.

IonDB and BigchainDB belong to "Databases" category of the tech stack.

Some of the features offered by IonDB are:

  • Storing arbitrary values associated to a key
  • Duplicate key support
  • Range and Equality queries

On the other hand, BigchainDB provides the following key features:

  • Decentralization
  • Immutability
  • Native Support of Multiassets

IonDB and BigchainDB are both open source tools. It seems that BigchainDB with 3.33K GitHub stars and 676 forks on GitHub has more adoption than IonDB with 530 GitHub stars and 39 GitHub forks.

                Ethereum
A decentralized platform for applications that run exactly as programmed without any chance of fraud, censorship or third-party interference.
                MongoDB
MongoDB stores data in JSON-like documents that can vary in structure, offering a dynamic, flexible schema. MongoDB was also designed for high availability and scalability, with built-in replication and auto-sharding.
                IPFS
It is a protocol and network designed to create a content-addressable, peer-to-peer method of storing and sharing hypermedia in a distributed file system.
                MySQL
The MySQL software delivers a very fast, multi-threaded, multi-user, and robust SQL (Structured Query Language) database server. MySQL Server is intended for mission-critical, heavy-load production systems as well as for embedding into mass-deployed software.
                PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL is an advanced object-relational database management system that supports an extended subset of the SQL standard, including transactions, foreign keys, subqueries, triggers, user-defined types and functions.
