What is Hazelcast?

With its various distributed data structures, distributed caching capabilities, elastic nature, memcache support, integration with Spring and Hibernate and more importantly with so many happy users, Hazelcast is feature-rich, enterprise-ready and developer-friendly in-memory data grid solution.

What is Microsoft SQL Server?

Microsoft® SQL Server is a database management and analysis system for e-commerce, line-of-business, and data warehousing solutions.

What is SQLite?

SQLite is an embedded SQL database engine. Unlike most other SQL databases, SQLite does not have a separate server process. SQLite reads and writes directly to ordinary disk files. A complete SQL database with multiple tables, indices, triggers, and views, is contained in a single disk file.

What are some alternatives to Hazelcast, Microsoft SQL Server, and SQLite?
    Redis
Redis is an open source, BSD licensed, advanced key-value store. It is often referred to as a data structure server since keys can contain strings, hashes, lists, sets and sorted sets.
    Apache Spark
Spark is a fast and general processing engine compatible with Hadoop data. It can run in Hadoop clusters through YARN or Spark's standalone mode, and it can process data in HDFS, HBase, Cassandra, Hive, and any Hadoop InputFormat. It is designed to perform both batch processing (similar to MapReduce) and new workloads like streaming, interactive queries, and machine learning.
    Cassandra
Partitioning means that Cassandra can distribute your data across multiple machines in an application-transparent matter. Cassandra will automatically repartition as machines are added and removed from the cluster. Row store means that like relational databases, Cassandra organizes data by rows and columns. The Cassandra Query Language (CQL) is a close relative of SQL.
    Memcached
Memcached is an in-memory key-value store for small chunks of arbitrary data (strings, objects) from results of database calls, API calls, or page rendering.
    Apache Ignite
It is a memory-centric distributed database, caching, and processing platform for transactional, analytical, and streaming workloads delivering in-memory speeds at petabyte scale

We've always counted on SQL Server as our database backend. It has served us well over the years. It isn't the cheapest part of our stack, but with the plethora of tools provided by 3rd parties, we have found an incredible and scalable method of keeping our data available and easy to maintain.

We build queries in PHP with DSQL that work with SQLite. We also have SQLite data controller, so that you can build SQLite-based models.

HazelCast is the foundation for the distributed system that hosts our APIs and intelligent workflows. We wrap the core HazelCast functions in Clojure protocols to implement micro-services on top of a coherent, single-process instance per virtual node.

Used during the "build process" of Coolfront Mobile's Flat rate search engine database. Flat rate data that resides in Salesforce is transformed using SQLite into a format that is usable for our mobile Flat rate search engine (AKA: Charlie).

RDBTools is a self-hosted application, and it is important that the installation process is simple. With SQLite, we create a new database file for every analysis. Once the analysis is done, the SQLite file can be thrown away easily.

Our core systems that we integrate with are using SQL Server 2012 / 2016 database servers. We use database views on core system databases to help build our domain model.

There's really no call for something heavier for this site. SQLite is simple, easy to use and quite reliable given its age.
