Honeybadger vs Sentry: What are the differences?

  1. Feature Set: Sentry offers an extensive feature set that includes real-time error monitoring, performance tracking, release tracking, and more. On the other hand, Honeybadger focuses primarily on error monitoring and exception tracking, with a smaller set of additional features.

  2. Pricing Structure: While both Honeybadger and Sentry offer free plans, Sentry's pricing structure is more flexible and includes additional options for larger teams and enterprises. Honeybadger has a simpler pricing structure and may be more cost-effective for smaller teams or individual developers.

  3. Integration Options: Sentry provides a wide range of integrations with popular tools and services, making it easier to incorporate into existing workflows and development processes. Honeybadger also offers integrations but may have limitations compared to the extensive options provided by Sentry.

  4. Customization Capabilities: Sentry allows for a high level of customization, with features like custom monitoring rules, alert configurations, and issue management settings. Honeybadger offers some customization options but may not be as robust as Sentry in this aspect.

  5. User Interface and User Experience: Sentry has a modern, user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate and provides detailed insights into errors and performance issues. Honeybadger's interface is simple and straightforward, which may appeal to users looking for a more streamlined experience.

  6. Community Support: Sentry has a larger and more active community of users and contributors, which can be beneficial for getting help, sharing knowledge, and staying up-to-date on the latest features and best practices. Honeybadger also has a community but may not be as extensive as Sentry's.

In Summary, Honeybadger and Sentry differ in their feature sets, pricing structures, integration options, customization capabilities, user interfaces, and community support.

Decisions about Honeybadger and Sentry

I essentially inherited a Shopify theme that was originally created by an agency. After discovering a number of errors being thrown in the Dev Console just by scrolling through the website, I needed more visibility over any errors happening in the field. Having used both Sentry and TrackJS, I always got lost in the TrackJS interface, so I felt more comfortable introducing Sentry. The Sentry free tier is also very generous, although it turns out the theme threw over 15k errors in less than a week.

I highly recommend setting up error tracking from day one. Theoretically, you should never need to upgrade from the free tier if you're keeping on top of the errors...
