Bitbucket vs Laravel Forge: What are the differences?

Introduction: Here are some key differences between Bitbucket and Laravel Forge.

  1. Hosting vs. Deployment: Bitbucket is primarily a code hosting platform that allows developers to manage and collaborate on code repositories, while Laravel Forge is a deployment tool specifically designed for deploying Laravel applications to servers. Bitbucket focuses on version control, code review, and project management, whereas Laravel Forge simplifies the process of setting up and managing servers for Laravel applications.

  2. Version Control vs. Server Management: Bitbucket provides a version control system using Git or Mercurial, enabling teams to track changes in code, manage branches, and collaborate on projects. On the other hand, Laravel Forge focuses on server management, automating tasks like server provisioning, SSL certificate installation, and deployment of Laravel applications.

  3. Free vs. Paid: Bitbucket offers both free and paid plans, with limitations on the number of users, repositories, and build minutes. Laravel Forge, on the other hand, is a paid service with a monthly subscription fee. While Bitbucket can be used for free for small teams or personal projects, Laravel Forge caters more towards professional developers and teams looking for streamlined server management solutions.

  4. Integration Capabilities: Bitbucket integrates with various tools and services such as Jira, Trello, and Bamboo for enhanced project management and continuous integration. Laravel Forge integrates with services like DigitalOcean, Amazon Web Services, and Linode for server provisioning and deployment, providing a seamless workflow for Laravel developers.

  5. Code Review vs. Automated Deployment: In Bitbucket, code review is an essential feature that allows team members to collaborate on code changes, provide feedback, and ensure code quality through pull requests and inline comments. Laravel Forge, on the other hand, focuses on automated deployment processes, enabling developers to deploy code changes to servers with ease, reducing downtime and ensuring scalability.

  6. Community Support vs. Official Support: Bitbucket has a large community of users and contributors offering support, documentation, and resources for developers using the platform. Laravel Forge, being a paid service, provides official support and documentation directly from the Laravel team, ensuring reliability and timely assistance for users.

In Summary, Bitbucket is a code hosting platform focused on version control and collaboration, while Laravel Forge is a deployment tool specifically designed for managing servers and deploying Laravel applications efficiently.

Do you review your Pull/Merge Request before assigning Reviewers?

If you work in a team opening a Pull Request (or Merge Request) looks appropriate. However, have you ever thought about opening a Pull/Merge Request when working by yourself? Here's a checklist of things you can review in your own:

  • Pick the correct target branch
  • Make Drafts explicit
  • Name things properly
  • Ask help for tools
  • Remove the noise
  • Fetch necessary data
  • Understand Mergeability
  • Pass the message
  • Add screenshots
  • Be found in the future
  • Comment inline in your changes

Read the blog post for more detailed explanation for each item :D

One of the magic tricks git performs is the ability to rewrite log history. You can do it in many ways, but git rebase -i is the one I most use. With this command, It’s possible to switch commits order, remove a commit, squash two or more commits, or edit, for instance.

It’s particularly useful to run it before opening a pull request. It allows developers to “clean up” the mess and organize commits before submitting to review. If you follow the practice 3 and 4, then the list of commits should look very similar to a task list. It should reveal the rationale you had, telling the story of how you end up with that final code.
