SAP Crystal Reports vs Tableau: What are the differences?

Introduction

SAP Crystal Reports and Tableau are two popular business intelligence tools used for data analysis and reporting. While they have some similarities, there are key differences that make each tool unique. Let's explore these differences:

  1. Integration with SAP systems: SAP Crystal Reports is tightly integrated with SAP systems, allowing users to directly access data from SAP applications and databases. This integration enables seamless reporting and analysis of SAP data. On the other hand, Tableau offers connectivity to various data sources, including SAP systems, but it is not specifically designed to work with SAP data as closely as Crystal Reports.

  2. Visualization capabilities: Tableau is widely acknowledged for its powerful visual analytics capabilities. It provides a wide range of interactive charts, graphs, and maps, allowing users to create visually appealing and interactive dashboards. Crystal Reports, while it also provides basic visualization features, does not offer the same level of sophisticated and interactive visualizations as Tableau.

  3. Ease of use for end-users: Tableau is known for its user-friendly interface and intuitive drag-and-drop functionality. It enables end-users to quickly create and modify reports and dashboards without the need for extensive technical knowledge. In contrast, Crystal Reports has a steeper learning curve and requires more technical expertise to design and customize reports.

  4. Data exploration and ad-hoc analysis: Tableau is designed to support ad-hoc data exploration and analysis. Users can easily navigate through large datasets, apply filters, and perform on-the-fly calculations to gain insights. Crystal Reports, while it allows for basic data exploration, is more focused on structured reporting and is not as flexible for ad-hoc analysis.

  5. Collaboration and sharing: Tableau provides robust collaboration and sharing capabilities, allowing users to publish reports and dashboards to the Tableau Server or Tableau Online for easy access and collaboration across teams. Crystal Reports, on the other hand, primarily relies on exporting reports to various formats (such as PDF or Excel) for sharing, which may require additional steps for collaboration and may not offer real-time data updates.

  6. Data connectivity and live data connection: Tableau offers a wide range of native connectors for different data sources, making it easy to connect and analyze data from various systems. It also supports live data connections, allowing users to work with real-time data without the need for data extraction or manual updates. Crystal Reports, while it also supports various data connectors, generally relies on static data snapshots rather than live connections.

In summary, SAP Crystal Reports provides strong integration with SAP systems, whereas Tableau offers superior visualization capabilities, ease of use for end-users, and flexibility for data exploration and collaboration.

Decisions about SAP Crystal Reports and Tableau

Very easy-to-use UI. Good way to make data available inside the company for analysis.

Has some built-in visualizations and can be easily integrated with other JS visualization libraries such as D3.

Can be embedded into product to provide reporting functions.

Support team are helpful.

The only complain I have is lack of API support. Hard to track changes as codes and automate report deployment.

Power BI is really easy to start with. If you have just several Excel sheets or CSV files, or you build your first automated pipeline, it is actually quite intuitive to build your first reports.

And as we have kept growing, all the additional features and tools were just there within the Azure platform and/or Office 365.

Since we started building Mews, we have already passed several milestones in becoming start up, later also a scale up company and now getting ready to grow even further, and during all these phases Power BI was just the right tool for us.
