I settled on Jekyll to be the CMS for my research blog. Out of the box it works, and over time I added to it... why write a dissertation when you can instead hack templates to tweak things.
I create generative art. Illustrator offers an API so I can automate that process. Yes, its big, its ugly, the never-ending updates reduce my machine to a crawl, and the subscription model is death by $49.99 every month.
Pretty much all of my research blog is written or edited using Sublime... except for those times when I use iAwriter.
