I think that the best way to start eCommerce is SaaS. I used Ecwid, but international is a more popular Shopify. By the way, at StackShare there are a few open-source alternatives, for example, Medusa (was in the last email from StackShare)

After your sales will grow you may choose anything you want. As I know, there are more solutions for eCommerce in PHP. One of the most popular is WooCommerce (based on WordPress). OpenCart is also written in PHP, but 7 years ago it needs to programming knowledge to make a shopping site from your dream. But I don't advise using Magento - it's a really very heavy monster for corporations.
