Bigpanda vs PagerDuty: What are the differences?

Key Differences between Bigpanda and PagerDuty

1. Integration Capabilities: Bigpanda offers comprehensive integrations with over 150 popular monitoring, ticketing, and collaboration tools, which allow users to aggregate and correlate data from various sources in one centralized platform. On the other hand, PagerDuty provides a similar level of integration capabilities but with a narrower range of supported tools.

2. Event Correlation: Bigpanda stands out with its machine learning capabilities that automatically group related alerts and incidents into high-level incidents, providing a consolidated view and reducing alert fatigue. Meanwhile, PagerDuty relies on manual configurations and rules to correlate events, which may require more effort from users to achieve the same level of incident consolidation.

3. Incident Management: While both Bigpanda and PagerDuty offer incident management features, Bigpanda provides more advanced functionalities such as runbooks, collaboration tools, and automated workflow management. PagerDuty, on the other hand, focuses more on basic incident alerting and escalation, which may be suitable for organizations with simpler incident management needs.

4. Scalability and Performance: Bigpanda is designed to handle large-scale environments with thousands of alerts, incidents, and users, ensuring high performance and scalability. PagerDuty also excels in this aspect but may face limitations when dealing with extremely high volumes of events and users.

5. Analytics and Insights: Bigpanda offers robust analytics and reporting capabilities, providing in-depth insights into alert patterns, incident response performance, and system behavior. While PagerDuty provides some level of analytics, Bigpanda offers more advanced data visualization and customizable reporting options.

6. User Interface and User Experience: Bigpanda offers a modern and intuitive user interface with customizable dashboards, making it easier for users to navigate and monitor their environment. PagerDuty's interface is also user-friendly, but it may not provide the same level of customization and flexibility.

In Summary, Bigpanda provides advanced integration capabilities, event correlation through machine learning, comprehensive incident management features, scalability and performance for large-scale environments, robust analytics and insights, and a modern user interface. PagerDuty, on the other hand, offers a narrower range of integrations, manual event correlation, basic incident management features, and a user-friendly interface.

I'm currently on PagerDuty, but I'm about to add enough users to go out of the starter tier, which will dramatically increase my license cost. PagerDuty is, in my experience, quite clunky, and I'm looking for alternatives. Squadcast is one I've found, and another is xMatters. Between the three, I'm currently leaning towards xMatters, but I'd like to know what people suggest.

Disclosure I work at Splunk and VictorOps is a Splunk product. But I would suggest in addition to trying the others adding VO to your list. It's important to note that some of the tools are designed as Incident Response tools, others started as mass notification tools. For on-call stick to those designed for incident response.

I would say to use Squadcast, the configuration is easy, provides a lot of features such as war room, RCA tracking postmortem, RBAC and they are quick to add features on request as well, recently I asked for custom on call reminders and I am sure they will add it really soon.
