Brackets vs Notepad++ vs Sublime Text: What are the differences?
Introduction
In the world of code editing, developers often have preferences for the tools they use. Brackets, Notepad++, and Sublime Text are popular choices for editing code. Let's delve into the key differences between these three code editors.
User Interface: Brackets offers a minimalist interface with live preview functions, catering to web developers. Notepad++ provides a functional and straightforward interface with customizable features for syntax highlighting and folding. Sublime Text boasts a clean and sleek interface with a wide range of theme options for customization.
Features: Brackets is known for its preprocessor support, inline editors, and built-in and third-party extensions. Notepad++ offers a vast array of plugins, syntax highlighting, auto-completion, and a robust search and replace function. Sublime Text stands out with its multiple selections, powerful API, and command palette for quick access to functions.
Performance: Brackets is optimized for web development tasks, providing live previews and quick editing capabilities. Notepad++ is lightweight and fast, making it an efficient choice for working on large files. Sublime Text excels in handling multiple files and large projects while maintaining performance speed.
Cross-Platform Compatibility: Brackets is designed primarily for macOS and Windows, making it less attractive for Linux users. Notepad++ is exclusively available for Windows, limiting its use on other operating systems. Sublime Text is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux, offering versatility across different platforms.
Language Support: Brackets focuses on web development languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, providing tailor-made features for these tasks. Notepad++ supports a wide range of programming languages with comprehensive language support and customization options. Sublime Text also supports multiple languages with a robust environment for coding in various programming languages.
Community Support: Brackets has an active community that regularly updates extensions and plugins, enhancing the functionality of the code editor. Notepad++ has a dedicated user base that contributes to the development of plugins and provides support for common issues. Sublime Text has a loyal community that creates plugins, themes, and packages to extend its capabilities.
In Summary, when choosing between Brackets, Notepad++, and Sublime Text, consider factors such as user interface, features, performance, cross-platform compatibility, language support, and community support to find the best fit for your coding needs.
Lightweight and versatile. Huge library of extensions that enable you to integrate a host of services to your development environment. VS Code's biggest strength is its library of extensions which enables it to directly compete with every single major IDE for almost all major programming languages.
Visual Studio Code became famous over the past 3+ years I believe. The clean UI, easy to use UX and the plethora of integrations made it a very easy decision for us. Our gripe with Sublime was probably only the UX side. VSCode has not failed us till now, and still is able to support our development env without any significant effort.
Goland being paid, as well as built only for Go seemed like a significant limitation to not consider it.
Since communication with Github is not necessary, the Atom is less convenient in working with text and code. Sublim's support and understanding of projects is best for us. Notepad for us is a completely outdated solution with an unacceptable interface. We use a good theme for Sublim ayu-dark
I decided to choose VSCode over Sublime text for my Systems Programming class in C. What I love about VSCode is its awesome ability to add extensions. Intellisense is a beautiful debugger, and Remote SSH allows me to login and make real-time changes in VSCode to files on my university server. This is an awesome alternative to going back and forth on pushing/pulling code and logging into servers in the terminal. Great choice for anyone interested in C programming!
