Flynn vs OpenShift: What are the differences?

Flynn: Next generation open source platform as a service. Flynn lets you deploy apps with git push and containers. Developers can deploy any app to any cluster in seconds; OpenShift: Red Hat's free Platform as a Service (PaaS) for hosting Java, PHP, Ruby, Python, Node.js, and Perl apps. OpenShift is Red Hat's Cloud Computing Platform as a Service (PaaS) offering. OpenShift is an application platform in the cloud where application developers and teams can build, test, deploy, and run their applications.

Flynn and OpenShift can be primarily classified as "Platform as a Service" tools.

Some of the features offered by Flynn are:

  • Flynn goes beyond 12 factor apps. Run any Linux process written in any language or framework, even stateful apps on your own servers or any public cloud.
  • Scaling or adding a new cluster is simple: just add more nodes. Everything is containerized, Flynn takes care of distributing work across the cluster.
  • Flynn is 100% free and open source. Flynn works great out of the box, and since Flynn is modular and API-driven it's easy to modify and swap components to suit your needs.

On the other hand, OpenShift provides the following key features:

  • Built-in support for Node.js, Ruby, Python, PHP, Perl, and Java (the standard in today's Enterprise)
  • OpenShift is extensible with a customizable cartridge functionality that allows developers to add any other language they wish. We've seen everything from Clojure to Cobol running on OpenShift.
  • OpenShift supports frameworks ranging from Spring, to Rails, to Play

"Free" is the primary reason why developers consider Flynn over the competitors, whereas "Good free plan" was stated as the key factor in picking OpenShift.

Flynn and OpenShift are both open source tools. It seems that Flynn with 7.24K GitHub stars and 534 forks on GitHub has more adoption than OpenShift with 915 GitHub stars and 563 GitHub forks.

What are some alternatives to Flynn and OpenShift?
    Deis
Deis can deploy any application or service that can run inside a Docker container. In order to be scaled horizontally, applications must follow Heroku's 12-factor methodology and store state in external backing services.
    Kubernetes
Kubernetes is an open source orchestration system for Docker containers. It handles scheduling onto nodes in a compute cluster and actively manages workloads to ensure that their state matches the users declared intentions.
    Dokku
Docker powered mini-Heroku. The smallest PaaS implementation you've ever seen.
    Heroku
Heroku is a cloud application platform – a new way of building and deploying web apps. Heroku lets app developers spend 100% of their time on their application code, not managing servers, deployment, ongoing operations, or scaling.
    Google App Engine
Google has a reputation for highly reliable, high performance infrastructure. With App Engine you can take advantage of the 10 years of knowledge Google has in running massively scalable, performance driven systems. App Engine applications are easy to build, easy to maintain, and easy to scale as your traffic and data storage needs grow.

Heroku vs OpenShift. I've never decided which one is better. Heroku is easier to configure. Openshift provide a better machine for free. Heroku has many addons for free. I've chosen Heroku because of easy initial set-up. I had deployment based on git push. I also tried direct deployment of jar file. Currently Heroku runs my Docker image. Heroku has very good documentation like for beginners. So if you want to start with something, let's follow Heroku. On the other hand OpenShift seems like a PRO tool supported by @RedHat.

I needed a PaaS provider that didn't drop all the time and it's hard to find a good option for PHP applications. Openshift takes care of it. They are a little behind on PHP versions, but that can be solved with a custom cartridge. It requires a little more elbow grease to get rolling when you want to implement something they don't already have, but their quickstarts are great to get rolling with the basics quickly.
