Honeybadger vs Rollbar vs Sentry: What are the differences?
Introduction
When choosing between error monitoring tools like Honeybadger, Rollbar, and Sentry, it's essential to understand the key differences to make an informed decision for your project.
Data Sources: Honeybadger predominantly focuses on monitoring for Ruby and Ruby on Rails applications, while Rollbar and Sentry offer support for a wider range of programming languages, frameworks, and platforms. Rollbar supports more languages compared to Sentry, making it a more versatile choice for teams working with various technologies.
Deployment Options: Rollbar and Sentry provide on-premises options for those needing added control over their error monitoring data and security. In contrast, Honeybadger is a cloud-based solution with no on-premises deployment option available, making it ideal for teams looking for a hassle-free setup.
Integrations and Alerting: Sentry offers extensive integrations with popular tools and services, along with customizable alerting options based on specific criteria. Rollbar also provides a wide range of integrations but has a more straightforward alerting system compared to Sentry, which may be preferred by users looking for simplicity.
Performance Monitoring: Sentry offers additional features for performance monitoring alongside error tracking, providing insights into application performance bottlenecks and latency issues. Rollbar and Honeybadger primarily focus on error monitoring, without the depth of performance analysis tools offered by Sentry.
Community Support and Documentation: Rollbar and Sentry have robust community support and documentation, making it easier for users to find solutions to common problems and troubleshoot issues efficiently. Honeybadger also offers good support but may have slightly fewer resources compared to Rollbar and Sentry.
Pricing Models: Each tool has its unique pricing model based on factors like the number of events, users, retention periods, and custom requirements. It's essential to compare the pricing structures of Honeybadger, Rollbar, and Sentry to determine which aligns best with your budget and needs before making a decision.
In Summary, understanding the differences in data sources, deployment options, integrations, performance monitoring, support, and pricing models will help you choose between Honeybadger, Rollbar, and Sentry for your error monitoring needs.
I essentially inherited a Shopify theme that was originally created by an agency. After discovering a number of errors being thrown in the Dev Console just by scrolling through the website, I needed more visibility over any errors happening in the field. Having used both Sentry and TrackJS, I always got lost in the TrackJS interface, so I felt more comfortable introducing Sentry. The Sentry free tier is also very generous, although it turns out the theme threw over 15k errors in less than a week.
I highly recommend setting up error tracking from day one. Theoretically, you should never need to upgrade from the free tier if you're keeping on top of the errors...
