Katalon Studio vs Postman: What are the differences?

Introduction

Katalon Studio and Postman are powerful tools used for API testing and automation. While both tools serve the same purpose, they have key differences that set them apart. In this article, we will explore the six main differences between Katalon Studio and Postman.

  1. Testing Capabilities: Katalon Studio is a comprehensive test automation solution that supports both API and web testing. It allows users to perform end-to-end testing by integrating API tests with UI tests. On the other hand, Postman primarily focuses on API testing and does not provide extensive UI testing capabilities.

  2. Scripting Language: Katalon Studio supports multiple scripting languages such as Groovy and JavaScript, allowing testers to write complex test scripts with ease. Meanwhile, Postman utilizes JavaScript to write scripts, which may be a limiting factor for testers who prefer other scripting languages.

  3. Collaboration and Team Management: Katalon Studio offers built-in collaboration and team management features, enabling testers to work collaboratively on shared projects. It allows for easier project setup, test case version control, and test execution across different machines. Postman, on the other hand, lacks built-in collaboration features, making it less suitable for teams working on larger projects.

  4. Rich Test Execution Options: Katalon Studio offers a wide range of test execution options, supporting both local execution and distributed test execution through integration with various testing frameworks. It also supports parallel test execution, enabling users to run multiple tests simultaneously for faster test execution. In contrast, Postman primarily focuses on local test execution and lacks the advanced test execution capabilities of Katalon Studio.

  5. User-Friendly Interface: Katalon Studio provides a user-friendly interface that is suitable for both technical and non-technical users. It offers a comprehensive test case management system and a visual test scripting feature, making it easy to create and maintain test cases. Postman, on the other hand, has a more technical interface focused on APIs, which may require users to have a deeper understanding of API concepts.

  6. Reporting and Analytics: Katalon Studio provides detailed test reports and analytics, allowing users to track the execution status, identify bottlenecks, and generate comprehensive test reports. It also integrates with third-party analytics tools for advanced reporting and analysis. Postman, on the other hand, offers basic reporting capabilities, but it may lack the advanced analytics features provided by Katalon Studio.

In Summary, Katalon Studio is a comprehensive test automation solution that supports both API and web testing, offers rich collaboration and test execution capabilities, provides a user-friendly interface, and allows for detailed reporting and analytics. Postman, on the other hand, primarily focuses on API testing, has scripting limitations, lacks built-in collaboration features, and offers basic reporting capabilities.

ReviewonPostmanPostman

I use Postman because of the ease of team-management, using workspaces and teams, runner, collections, environment variables, test-scripts (post execution), variable management (pre and post execution), folders (inside collections, for better management of APIs), newman, easy-ci-integration (and probably a few more things that I am not able to recall right now).

Needs advice

From a StackShare Community member: "I just started working for a start-up and we are in desperate need of better documentation for our API. Currently our API docs is in a README.md file. We are evaluating Postman and Swagger UI. Since there are many options and I was wondering what other StackSharers would recommend?"

Needs adviceonPostmanPostmanKatalon StudioKatalon Studio

I want to do api testing using any one of this tool. I need to run the test scripts whenever new collection has been given. So if i run my test in Postman, i need to add test scripts manually every time i get new collections. Guide me is there any alternate solutions to reuse my test scripts in postman or which one is best either Katalon Studio or postman..

What are some alternatives to Postman, Katalon Studio?

BrowserStack

BrowserStack

BrowserStack is the leading test platform built for developers & QAs to expand test coverage, scale & optimize testing with cross-browser, real device cloud, accessibility, visual testing, test management, and test observability.

Selenium

Selenium

Selenium automates browsers. That's it! What you do with that power is entirely up to you. Primarily, it is for automating web applications for testing purposes, but is certainly not limited to just that. Boring web-based administration tasks can (and should!) also be automated as well.

Sauce Labs

Sauce Labs

Cloud-based automated testing platform enables developers and QEs to perform functional, JavaScript unit, and manual tests with Selenium or Appium on web and mobile apps. Videos and screenshots for easy debugging. Secure and CI-ready.

Swagger UI

Swagger UI

Swagger UI is a dependency-free collection of HTML, Javascript, and CSS assets that dynamically generate beautiful documentation and sandbox from a Swagger-compliant API

LambdaTest

LambdaTest

LambdaTest platform provides secure, scalable and insightful test orchestration for website, and mobile app testing. Customers at different points in their DevOps lifecycle can leverage Automation and/or Manual testing on LambdaTest.

Karma

Karma

Karma is not a testing framework, nor an assertion library. Karma just launches a HTTP server, and generates the test runner HTML file you probably already know from your favourite testing framework. So for testing purposes you can use pretty much anything you like.

Paw

Paw

Paw is a full-featured and beautifully designed Mac app that makes interaction with REST services delightful. Either you are an API maker or consumer, Paw helps you build HTTP requests, inspect the server's response and even generate client code.

Apiary

Apiary

It takes more than a simple HTML page to thrill your API users. The right tools take weeks of development. Weeks that apiary.io saves.

Karate DSL

Karate DSL

Combines API test-automation, mocks and performance-testing into a single, unified framework. The BDD syntax popularized by Cucumber is language-neutral, and easy for even non-programmers. Besides powerful JSON & XML assertions, you can run tests in parallel for speed - which is critical for HTTP API testing.

Playwright

Playwright

It is a Node library to automate the Chromium, WebKit and Firefox browsers with a single API. It enables cross-browser web automation that is ever-green, capable, reliable and fast.
