Navicat vs TablePlus: What are the differences?

Introduction

Navicat and TablePlus are both popular database management tools that offer a range of features for managing and manipulating databases. While they serve the same purpose, there are several key differences between the two.

  1. Cross-platform Support: Navicat offers versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it a more versatile option for users who work across different operating systems. On the other hand, TablePlus currently only supports macOS and iOS, limiting its availability to a specific set of users.

  2. Supported Databases: Navicat supports a wider range of databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, and SQLite, giving users more flexibility in terms of working with different database types. TablePlus, on the other hand, primarily focuses on MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server databases, making it a more specialized tool for these specific database types.

  3. User Interface: Navicat provides a comprehensive and feature-rich user interface that includes visual query builders, data modeling tools, and data import/export capabilities. TablePlus offers a simpler and cleaner interface, which some users may find more intuitive and easier to navigate.

  4. Collaboration Features: Navicat offers advanced collaboration features such as real-time data synchronization, sharing of connection settings among team members, and secure cloud backups. TablePlus, on the other hand, has limited collaboration features and primarily focuses on individual productivity.

  5. Pricing: Navicat is a commercial tool that requires a paid license for full access to all features. It offers different editions with varying prices depending on the specific database type and additional functionality required. TablePlus, on the other hand, is available as a freemium tool, with a free version offering basic features and a paid version unlocking additional advanced features.

  6. Customer Support: Navicat provides 24/7 customer support through various channels including email, live chat, and phone. They offer timely response and assistance to users in case of any issues or queries. TablePlus also offers customer support, but their response times and availability may vary, and they may not provide the same level of round-the-clock support as Navicat.

In Summary, Navicat and TablePlus differ in terms of cross-platform support, supported databases, user interface, collaboration features, pricing models, and customer support options.

Decisions about Navicat and TablePlus
Adam Taylor

We were looking a tool that would allow us to do MySQL and PostgreSQL development/administration from a single tool. We decided on Navicat Premium because it can connect to MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQLite databases - and simultaneously. It's also compatible with Amazon RDS and Microsoft Azure, which we also use.

Moreover, we previously experienced the occasional freezing and crashing in MySQL Workbench. It also suffered from a poor design, with certain features being a bit difficult to find. Meanwhile, phpMyAdmin lacked schema visualization tools and seemed better suited to lightweight day to day transactions than some of the big jobs that we needed to do.
