Mollie vs PayPal: What are the differences?

Key Differences between Mollie and PayPal

Mollie and PayPal are two widely used online payment platforms, but they differ in several key aspects.

  1. Payment Methods: Mollie supports a wide range of payment methods, including credit/debit cards, bank transfers, iDEAL, SOFORT, and various local payment methods. On the other hand, PayPal primarily focuses on allowing payments through PayPal accounts and credit/debit cards.

  2. Transaction Fees: Mollie offers transparent and customizable pricing for businesses, with a pay-as-you-go model that allows choosing specific payment methods. PayPal, on the other hand, has a fixed transaction fee structure that may vary based on the transaction type, currency, and country.

  3. User Experience: Mollie provides a seamless checkout experience by offering payment solutions that can be easily integrated into websites and mobile applications. It allows businesses to customize the payment process according to their branding. PayPal also provides a user-friendly experience, but it requires users to have a PayPal account, which can sometimes lead to additional steps during the checkout process.

  4. Payouts and Settlement: Mollie offers flexible payout options, allowing businesses to make payments to recipients using various methods, such as bank transfers or digital wallets. PayPal offers convenient payout options but focuses more on transferring funds between PayPal accounts.

  5. International Support: Mollie supports payments in several countries, primarily focusing on Europe. It provides localized solutions and multilingual support for businesses operating internationally. PayPal, on the other hand, has a broader global presence, allowing businesses to accept payments from customers around the world in a wide range of currencies.

  6. Integrations and APIs: Both Mollie and PayPal offer robust API integration capabilities to allow businesses to seamlessly integrate payments into their websites or applications. However, Mollie provides a flexible API that allows for more customization options and offers deeper control over the payment process.

In summary, Mollie and PayPal differ in payment methods, transaction fees, user experience, payouts and settlement options, international support, and integrations/API capabilities. Each platform has its own strengths, and businesses should choose the one that aligns with their specific requirements and target audience.

We use GoCardless to simplify the way clients and partners pay for our services. What intrigued us is the quick and easy ACH feature that gives our clients the option to log in with their bank account and shoot the funds directly to our account. The fee, compared to Stripe is less. Stripe and PayPal charge 2.9% + 30c and Stripe also forces the client to enter in all of their payment details manually and then if the payment doesn't work, the client has to try all over again. GoCardless charges 1% + 25c which is much more reasonable dealing with the large projects that we are currently working on.

We integrate GoCardless with Xero to easily send out quick invoices, receive the funds and track all revenue in one place.
