MongoDB Compass vs Tableau: What are the differences?

Key Differences between MongoDB Compass and Tableau

MongoDB Compass and Tableau are both popular tools used for data analysis and visualization, but they have some key differences that set them apart.

  1. Data Storage and Structure: MongoDB Compass is a tool designed specifically for MongoDB databases, which store data in a JSON-like format called BSON. It allows users to easily navigate and query MongoDB databases. On the other hand, Tableau is a general-purpose data visualization tool that can connect to various data sources, including MongoDB, but it can also connect to traditional relational databases like SQL.

  2. Querying and Aggregation: MongoDB Compass provides a visual interface for querying and aggregating data in MongoDB databases. It allows users to write and execute MongoDB-specific queries using a graphical user interface. Tableau, on the other hand, provides a more SQL-like query language called Tableau Calculation Language (TCL) for data manipulation and aggregation.

  3. Data Visualization: Tableau is known for its powerful and flexible data visualization capabilities. It offers a wide range of chart types, interactive dashboards, and advanced visual analytics features. MongoDB Compass, on the other hand, focuses more on data exploration and manipulation rather than advanced visualizations.

  4. Collaboration and Sharing: Tableau offers extensive collaboration and sharing features, allowing users to publish dashboards to the web or Tableau Server for easy sharing and collaboration. It also provides advanced security and permission settings to control access to data and dashboards. MongoDB Compass, on the other hand, is a client-side tool that runs locally on the user's machine, making it more suitable for individual use rather than collaboration.

  5. Performance and Scalability: MongoDB Compass provides a user-friendly interface for performance profiling and optimization of MongoDB queries. It allows users to analyze and identify performance bottlenecks in their queries and provides recommendations for improvement. Tableau, on the other hand, is designed to handle large datasets and can scale to support enterprise-level data analysis and visualization.

  6. Cost and Licensing: MongoDB Compass is free to use for managing and querying MongoDB databases. Tableau, on the other hand, offers both free and paid versions, with the paid versions offering more advanced features and scalability options. Tableau also requires a separate license for connecting to and analyzing certain data sources.

In summary, MongoDB Compass is a specialized tool for managing and querying MongoDB databases, whereas Tableau is a more general-purpose data visualization tool that can connect to various data sources and offers more advanced visualization and collaboration features.

Decisions about MongoDB Compass and Tableau

Very easy-to-use UI. Good way to make data available inside the company for analysis.

Has some built-in visualizations and can be easily integrated with other JS visualization libraries such as D3.

Can be embedded into product to provide reporting functions.

Support team are helpful.

The only complain I have is lack of API support. Hard to track changes as codes and automate report deployment.

Power BI is really easy to start with. If you have just several Excel sheets or CSV files, or you build your first automated pipeline, it is actually quite intuitive to build your first reports.

And as we have kept growing, all the additional features and tools were just there within the Azure platform and/or Office 365.

Since we started building Mews, we have already passed several milestones in becoming start up, later also a scale up company and now getting ready to grow even further, and during all these phases Power BI was just the right tool for us.
