Datadog vs Wavefront: What are the differences?

Datadog and Wavefront are both popular monitoring and observability platforms used by businesses to track and analyze their systems and applications. However, they have key differences that make them suitable for different use cases.

1. **Data Collection**: Datadog collects data using agents that are installed on servers, while Wavefront uses a metrics data format that can be ingested by various data sources, providing more flexibility in data collection methods.

2. **Data Visualization**: Datadog has a user-friendly and intuitive interface for visualizing data, with various charts and dashboards readily available. On the other hand, Wavefront offers advanced visualization capabilities and dynamic charting options for analyzing complex data sets.

3. **Scalability & Performance**: Datadog is known for its scalability, making it suitable for large enterprises, whereas Wavefront is preferred for its high performance and speed, making it ideal for real-time data analysis and processing at scale.

4. **Cost**: Datadog has a tiered pricing model based on the number of hosts being monitored, while Wavefront offers a consumption-based pricing model, allowing users to pay only for the data they consume, making it more cost-effective for some organizations.

5. **Integration**: Datadog provides out-of-the-box integrations with popular tools and services, making it easier to set up monitoring for various systems. Wavefront, on the other hand, offers more extensive integration capabilities and customizable options for integrating with different data sources.

6. **Alerting & Monitoring**: Datadog offers robust alerting and monitoring features with customizable alerts and notifications, whereas Wavefront provides advanced alerting and anomaly detection functionalities that help in proactive monitoring and troubleshooting of issues.

In Summary, Datadog and Wavefront have key differences in data collection methods, visualization capabilities, scalability, pricing models, integrations, and alerting features, making them suitable for different monitoring and observability needs.

Needs adviceonDatadogDatadogDynatraceDynatraceAppDynamicsAppDynamics

Hey there! We are looking at Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic as options for our web application monitoring.

Current Environment: .NET Core Web app hosted on Microsoft IIS

Future Environment: Web app will be hosted on Microsoft Azure

Tech Stacks: IIS, RabbitMQ, Redis, Microsoft SQL Server

Requirement: Infra Monitoring, APM, Real - User Monitoring (User activity monitoring i.e., time spent on a page, most active page, etc.), Service Tracing, Root Cause Analysis, and Centralized Log Management.

Please advise on the above. Thanks!

Needs adviceonAmazon EKSAmazon EKSKubernetesKubernetesAWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)

We are looking for a centralised monitoring solution for our application deployed on Amazon EKS. We would like to monitor using metrics from Kubernetes, AWS services (NeptuneDB, AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, etc) and application microservice's custom metrics.

We are expected to use around 80 microservices (not replicas). I think a total of 200-250 microservices will be there in the system with 10-12 slave nodes.

We tried Prometheus but it looks like maintenance is a big issue. We need to manage scaling, maintaining the storage, and dealing with multiple exporters and Grafana. I felt this itself needs few dedicated resources (at least 2-3 people) to manage. Not sure if I am thinking in the correct direction. Please confirm.

You mentioned Datadog and Sysdig charges per host. Does it charge per slave node?

Decided

I chose Datadog APM because the much better APM insights it provides (flamegraph, percentiles by default).

The drawbacks of this decision are we had to move our production monitoring to TimescaleDB + Telegraf instead of NR Insight

NewRelic is definitely easier when starting out. Agent is only a lib and doesn't require a daemon
