AWS Storage Gateway vs Cohesity: What are the differences?

# AWS Storage Gateway vs Cohesity

## Introduction:
In this comparison, we will highlight the key differences between AWS Storage Gateway and Cohesity.

1. **Deployment Options**: AWS Storage Gateway offers various deployment options such as File Gateway, Volume Gateway, and Tape Gateway, catering to different storage needs and access methods. On the other hand, Cohesity provides a hyperconverged storage solution that combines storage, compute, and networking in a single platform for easier management.

2. **Integration with AWS Services**: AWS Storage Gateway seamlessly integrates with various AWS services such as S3, Glacier, and EBS, allowing users to leverage the scalability and cost-effectiveness of AWS. In comparison, Cohesity also offers integrations with AWS services but focuses more on data protection, backup, and disaster recovery capabilities.

3. **Data Management Capabilities**: AWS Storage Gateway provides caching, tiering, and replication features to optimize data management across on-premises and cloud environments. In contrast, Cohesity offers advanced data management features like global deduplication, compression, and encryption to ensure data efficiency and security.

4. **Scalability and Performance**: AWS Storage Gateway scales based on the chosen deployment option and can handle large volumes of data with high performance. Meanwhile, Cohesity's hyperconverged approach enables linear scalability and enhanced performance as more nodes are added to the cluster.

5. **Cost Structure**: AWS Storage Gateway follows a pay-as-you-go pricing model, where users only pay for the storage and data transfer they use. Cohesity, on the other hand, provides a subscription-based pricing model that includes software, support, and maintenance costs, offering predictability in expenses.

6. **Focus and Use Cases**: While AWS Storage Gateway caters to a wide range of storage needs and hybrid cloud scenarios, Cohesity primarily targets data management, backup, and recovery solutions for enterprises looking to simplify their IT infrastructure and reduce management complexities.

In Summary, AWS Storage Gateway and Cohesity differ in deployment options, integration with AWS services, data management capabilities, scalability, performance, cost structure, and focus on use cases.

What is AWS Storage Gateway?

The AWS Storage Gateway is a service connecting an on-premises software appliance with cloud-based storage. Once the AWS Storage Gateway’s software appliance is installed on a local host, you can mount Storage Gateway volumes to your on-premises application servers as iSCSI devices, enabling a wide variety of systems and applications to make use of them. Data written to these volumes is maintained on your on-premises storage hardware while being asynchronously backed up to AWS, where it is stored in Amazon Glacier or in Amazon S3 in the form of Amazon EBS snapshots. Snapshots are encrypted to make sure that customers do not have to worry about encrypting sensitive data themselves. When customers need to retrieve data, they can restore snapshots locally, or create Amazon EBS volumes from snapshots for use with applications running in Amazon EC2. It provides low-latency performance by maintaining frequently accessed data on-premises while securely storing all of your data encrypted.

What is Cohesity?

It allows IT professionals to backup, manage and gain insights from their data, across multiple systems or cloud providers.

What are some alternatives to AWS Storage Gateway and Cohesity?
      AWS Import/Export
Import/Export supports importing and exporting data into and out of Amazon S3 buckets. For significant data sets, AWS Import/Export is often faster than Internet transfer and more cost effective than upgrading your connectivity.
      AWS Direct Connect
AWS Direct Connect makes it easy to establish a dedicated network connection from your premises to AWS. Using AWS Direct Connect, you can establish private connectivity between AWS and your datacenter, office, or colocation environment, which in many cases can reduce your network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections.
      Dropbox
Harness the power of Dropbox. Connect to an account, upload, download, search, and more.
      Amazon Glacier
In order to keep costs low, Amazon Glacier is optimized for data that is infrequently accessed and for which retrieval times of several hours are suitable. With Amazon Glacier, customers can reliably store large or small amounts of data for as little as $0.01 per gigabyte per month, a significant savings compared to on-premises solutions.
      restic
It is a backup program that is fast, efficient and secure. It uses cryptography to guarantee the confidentiality and integrity of your data.
