Highcharts vs Matplotlib: What are the differences?

  1. Supported platforms: Highcharts is a JavaScript-based charting library that can be used in any web browser, while Matplotlib is a plotting library for Python, making it suitable for desktop and server-based applications.
  2. Ease of use: Highcharts provides a user-friendly API that allows developers to quickly create interactive charts with minimal code. On the other hand, Matplotlib requires more code and configuration to achieve similar results.
  3. Customization options: Highcharts offers a wide range of customization options, such as colors, styles, and animations, allowing users to create visually appealing charts. In contrast, Matplotlib provides a comprehensive set of customization features that enable fine-grained control over the appearance of plots.
  4. Data handling: Highcharts has built-in support for handling dynamic data updates, making it suitable for real-time applications. Matplotlib, on the other hand, requires manual updates to the plot when handling dynamic data.
  5. Chart types: Highcharts supports a wide variety of chart types, including line charts, bar charts, pie charts, and more, making it suitable for various data visualization needs. Matplotlib also provides a diverse range of plot types, but not as extensive as Highcharts.
  6. Integration with other frameworks: Highcharts can easily be integrated with popular web frameworks, such as Angular, React, and Vue.js. Matplotlib, being a Python library, can also be integrated with these frameworks through appropriate packages, but the ease of integration may vary.

In summary, Highcharts is a JavaScript-based charting library that offers ease of use, extensive customization options, and support for various chart types, while Matplotlib is a Python plotting library that provides fine-grained control over plots and can be integrated with other frameworks.

I've used Highcharts with both Angular Js Reactive applications (render as ReactJs) and also a bit of D3. Personally I found Highcharts to be the easiest to use but, with still quite a good level of customisability if you need it. graphs and charts then give D3 a try.
