AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) vs etcd: What are the differences?

What is AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)? Automatically distribute your incoming application traffic across multiple Amazon EC2 instances. With Elastic Load Balancing, you can add and remove EC2 instances as your needs change without disrupting the overall flow of information. If one EC2 instance fails, Elastic Load Balancing automatically reroutes the traffic to the remaining running EC2 instances. If the failed EC2 instance is restored, Elastic Load Balancing restores the traffic to that instance. Elastic Load Balancing offers clients a single point of contact, and it can also serve as the first line of defense against attacks on your network. You can offload the work of encryption and decryption to Elastic Load Balancing, so your servers can focus on their main task.

What is etcd? A distributed consistent key-value store for shared configuration and service discovery. etcd is a distributed key value store that provides a reliable way to store data across a cluster of machines. It’s open-source and available on GitHub. etcd gracefully handles master elections during network partitions and will tolerate machine failure, including the master.

AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) and etcd are primarily classified as "Load Balancer / Reverse Proxy" and "Open Source Service Discovery" tools respectively.

"Easy" is the top reason why over 46 developers like AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), while over 7 developers mention "Service discovery" as the leading cause for choosing etcd.

etcd is an open source tool with 25.9K GitHub stars and 5.26K GitHub forks. Here's a link to etcd's open source repository on GitHub.

Coursera, 9GAG, and Quora are some of the popular companies that use AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), whereas etcd is used by Beam, Giant Swarm, and CNCFlora. AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) has a broader approval, being mentioned in 724 company stacks & 316 developers stacks; compared to etcd, which is listed in 27 company stacks and 11 developer stacks.

What are some alternatives to AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) and etcd?
      HAProxy
HAProxy (High Availability Proxy) is a free, very fast and reliable solution offering high availability, load balancing, and proxying for TCP and HTTP-based applications.
      Traefik
A modern HTTP reverse proxy and load balancer that makes deploying microservices easy. Traefik integrates with your existing infrastructure components and configures itself automatically and dynamically.
      Envoy
Originally built at Lyft, Envoy is a high performance C++ distributed proxy designed for single services and applications, as well as a communication bus and “universal data plane” designed for large microservice “service mesh” architectures.
      DigitalOcean Load Balancer
Load Balancers are a highly available, fully-managed service that work right out of the box and can be deployed as fast as a Droplet. Load Balancers distribute incoming traffic across your infrastructure to increase your application's availability.
      GLBC
It is a GCE L7 load balancer controller that manages external loadbalancers configured through the Kubernetes Ingress API.

I use an Application Load Balancer to balance the load to the EC2 clusters of nightly.zerotoherojs.com and dojo.zerotoherojs.com.

Addditionally, ELB protects my cluster against DDOS attacks: So it is multi-birds with one stone.

We're progressively migrating from classic ELB to newer ALB for ssl offloading and NLB for internal load balancing.
