Nagios vs Thanos: What are the differences?
Developers describe Nagios as "Complete monitoring and alerting for servers, switches, applications, and services". Nagios is a host/service/network monitoring program written in C and released under the GNU General Public License. On the other hand, Thanos is detailed as "Highly available Prometheus setup with long term storage capabilities". Thanos is a set of components that can be composed into a highly available metric system with unlimited storage capacity. It can be added seamlessly on top of existing Prometheus deployments and leverages the Prometheus 2.0 storage format to cost-efficiently store historical metric data in any object storage while retaining fast query latencies. Additionally, it provides a global query view across all Prometheus installations and can merge data from Prometheus HA pairs on the fly.
Nagios and Thanos can be categorized as "Monitoring" tools.

- extendable I knew Nagios for decades but it was really outdated (by its architecture) at some point. That's why Icinga started first as a fork, not with Icinga2 it is completely built from scratch but backward-compatible with Nagios plugins. Now it has reached a state with which I am confident.
