Android SDK vs Clojure: What are the differences?

Developers describe Android SDK as "An SDK that provides you the API libraries and developer tools necessary to build, test, and debug apps for Android". Android provides a rich application framework that allows you to build innovative apps and games for mobile devices in a Java language environment. On the other hand, Clojure is detailed as "A dynamic programming language that targets the Java Virtual Machine". Clojure is designed to be a general-purpose language, combining the approachability and interactive development of a scripting language with an efficient and robust infrastructure for multithreaded programming. Clojure is a compiled language - it compiles directly to JVM bytecode, yet remains completely dynamic. Clojure is a dialect of Lisp, and shares with Lisp the code-as-data philosophy and a powerful macro system.

Android SDK can be classified as a tool in the "Frameworks (Full Stack)" category, while Clojure is grouped under "Languages".

"Android development", "Necessary for android" and "Android studio" are the key factors why developers consider Android SDK; whereas "It is a lisp", "Concise syntax" and "Persistent data structures" are the primary reasons why Clojure is favored.

Clojure is an open source tool with 7.85K GitHub stars and 1.25K GitHub forks. Here's a link to Clojure's open source repository on GitHub.

Google, Instacart, and Slack are some of the popular companies that use Android SDK, whereas Clojure is used by Nubank, CircleCI, and Groupon. Android SDK has a broader approval, being mentioned in 1084 company stacks & 907 developers stacks; compared to Clojure, which is listed in 95 company stacks and 80 developer stacks.

Advice on Clojure, Android SDK

Needs adviceonKotlinKotlin

We actually initially wrote a lot of networking code in Kotlin but the complexities involved prompted us to try and compile NodeJS for Android and port over all the networking logic to Node and communicate with node over the Java Native Interface.

This turned out to be a great decision considering our battery usage fell by 40% and rate of development increased by a factor of 2.

What are some alternatives to Clojure, Android SDK?

Node.js

Node.js

Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient, perfect for data-intensive real-time applications that run across distributed devices.

JavaScript

JavaScript

JavaScript is most known as the scripting language for Web pages, but used in many non-browser environments as well such as node.js or Apache CouchDB. It is a prototype-based, multi-paradigm scripting language that is dynamic, and supports object-oriented, imperative, and functional programming styles.

Python

Python

Python is a general purpose programming language created by Guido Van Rossum. Python is most praised for its elegant syntax and readable code, if you are just beginning your programming career python suits you best.

Rails

Rails

Rails is a web-application framework that includes everything needed to create database-backed web applications according to the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern.

PHP

PHP

Fast, flexible and pragmatic, PHP powers everything from your blog to the most popular websites in the world.

Django

Django

Django is a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design.

Ruby

Ruby

Ruby is a language of careful balance. Its creator, Yukihiro “Matz” Matsumoto, blended parts of his favorite languages (Perl, Smalltalk, Eiffel, Ada, and Lisp) to form a new language that balanced functional programming with imperative programming.

Laravel

Laravel

It is a web application framework with expressive, elegant syntax. It attempts to take the pain out of development by easing common tasks used in the majority of web projects, such as authentication, routing, sessions, and caching.

Java

Java

Java is a programming language and computing platform first released by Sun Microsystems in 1995. There are lots of applications and websites that will not work unless you have Java installed, and more are created every day. Java is fast, secure, and reliable. From laptops to datacenters, game consoles to scientific supercomputers, cell phones to the Internet, Java is everywhere!

Golang

Golang

Go is expressive, concise, clean, and efficient. Its concurrency mechanisms make it easy to write programs that get the most out of multicore and networked machines, while its novel type system enables flexible and modular program construction. Go compiles quickly to machine code yet has the convenience of garbage collection and the power of run-time reflection. It's a fast, statically typed, compiled language that feels like a dynamically typed, interpreted language.
