Discord vs Jami: What are the differences?

Introduction

In this article, we will be discussing the key differences between Discord and Jami. Both Discord and Jami are communication platforms used for chatting, voice calling, and video calling. However, they have some notable differences that set them apart from each other.

  1. User Interface and Design: Discord provides a sleek and modern user interface with various customization options. It offers a user-friendly design and intuitive navigation. On the other hand, Jami offers a more simplistic and straightforward user interface with a focus on privacy and security.

  2. Centralized vs. Decentralized: One of the fundamental differences between Discord and Jami is the way they handle data and communication. Discord operates on a centralized infrastructure, meaning all user data and communication are stored and processed on Discord's servers. Jami, on the other hand, is a decentralized peer-to-peer platform, where user data is stored locally and communication happens directly between users without the need for a centralized server.

  3. Open Source vs. Proprietary: Discord is a proprietary platform owned by a company, and while it offers a free version, it also has a premium subscription feature called Discord Nitro. Jami, on the other hand, is an open-source platform, which means the source code is publicly available, and anyone can modify or contribute to its development. It is completely free to use and doesn't have any premium or paid features.

  4. Privacy and Security: Discord places more emphasis on social features and community interaction, making it more suitable for gamers and larger online communities. Jami, on the other hand, prioritizes privacy and security, focusing on end-to-end encryption and providing users with control over their own data. While Discord does offer some privacy settings, Jami's decentralized architecture provides a higher level of privacy and security.

  5. Integrated Features: Discord offers a wide range of integrated features specifically designed for gamers, such as voice channels, screen sharing, in-game overlays, and integration with popular gaming platforms. Jami, being a more privacy-focused platform, doesn't provide as many integrated features but still offers basic chat, voice, and video calling functionalities.

  6. Community and Ecosystem: Discord has a large and thriving community with numerous public servers and communities dedicated to various interests, games, and topics. Jami, being a relatively newer platform, has a smaller community and ecosystem but is steadily growing as more people discover its unique advantages and features.

In summary, Discord and Jami differ in terms of user interface, data handling, openness, privacy and security features, integrated functionalities, and community size. While Discord focuses on community interaction and is highly popular among gamers, Jami prioritizes privacy and offers a more decentralized and open-source approach to communication.

I want to host an online Jeopardy game with less than 30 participants. During each round of the game, I'll stream some videos. The point is to gather friends together to play the Jeopardy game and watch random stuff. Please let me know if there's a more suitable platform other than Discord and Zoom. Thanks, everyone!

Personally, I think that Discord works much better than anything else, even if you don't have Nitro (which is what they call their premium plan). You could seriously do this Jeopardy thing with just Discord (and maybe a bot to make it easier)

Zoom would only let you have a crappy meeting that hackers could easily join. Discord actually has DDoS protection, Zoom just has things that can easily be bypassed.

And if you do want Nitro, it's only $9/mo or $99/yr

as many people say that you can only hold 30 to 10 people in one discord call if you were to make a server and add a chat or a VC you can hold up to 99 which is more than zoom and you can also use the text chat, general chat or anything else that you add and the best part you can hold pretty much infinite people I have personally seen servers with up to 100k people in it. One of the better parts is that you don't necessarily have to download it you can search it up on google and make an account it's as easy as that. Another thing is due to the original purpose of the website/app is that it's very customizable meaning that your students can customize heir profile pictures and names, but not to worry in a discord server you can have it where only you can change their nicknames so let's say things get too confusing or you want to be able to see who they really are you can just change it to their name. One last thing I will say is that you can have customizable ranks and so on so if you desire to split people into teams you can do so and with that, you can customize what they can do like give people ranks or de-rank them. Like I mentioned earlier about VC's you can also screen share and do videos so you can see their screen or their face.

    What is Discord?

Discord is a modern free voice & text chat app for groups of gamers. Our resilient Erlang backend running on the cloud has built in DDoS protection with automatic server failover.

    What is Jami?

It is a free software for universal communication which respects freedoms and privacy of its users. Its main goal is to provide a communication framework and end-user applications to make audio or video calls, send text messages and make generic data transfers. It makes this possible via multiple paradigms: a modern decentralized approach using a DHT to find peers or classical centralized SIP as a soft-phone.
