Filestack vs Tesseract OCR: What are the differences?

<Write Introduction here>
  1. Integration: Filestack is primarily focused on file uploading and storage solutions, offering seamless integration with various cloud storage providers like Dropbox and Google Drive. On the other hand, Tesseract OCR is an open-source optical character recognition engine focused on extracting text from images and documents, without providing direct file uploading or storage capabilities.

  2. Functionality: Filestack provides a wide range of file processing capabilities, such as image transformations and document conversions, in addition to its core file uploading feature. In contrast, Tesseract OCR specializes in accurately recognizing and extracting text from images, making it a powerful tool for digitizing physical documents and images containing text.

  3. Pricing: Filestack offers a subscription-based pricing model that includes different tiers based on the volume of file uploads and processed data. In contrast, Tesseract OCR is open-source software, meaning it is free to use without any subscription fees. However, additional costs may be incurred for setting up and maintaining the OCR engine infrastructure.

  4. Accuracy: While Filestack provides reliable file uploading and processing services, it may not offer the same level of text recognition accuracy as Tesseract OCR, which is known for its high accuracy in extracting text from complex images and documents. This makes Tesseract OCR a preferred choice for applications requiring precise text extraction.

  5. Customization: Filestack offers customization options for file upload widgets and processing workflows, allowing users to tailor the platform to their specific needs. In contrast, Tesseract OCR can be customized through training on specific fonts and languages, enabling users to improve OCR performance for their unique document types and languages.

  6. Community Support: Tesseract OCR benefits from a large and active community of developers and contributors, providing continuous updates, bug fixes, and support for the software. While Filestack also has a support team, the community support for Tesseract OCR can offer additional resources and insights for users seeking assistance or improvements.

In Summary, Filestack and Tesseract OCR differ in their focus on file uploading/storage versus text extraction, pricing models, accuracy in text recognition, customization options, and community support.

Advice on Filestack, Tesseract OCR

Decided

AWS Rekognition has an OCR feature but can recognize only up to 50 words per image, which is a deal-breaker for us. (see my tweet).

Also, we discovered fantastic speed and quality improvements in the 4.x versions of Tesseract. Meanwhile, the quality of AWS Rekognition's OCR remains to be mediocre in comparison.

We run Tesseract serverlessly in AWS Lambda via aws-lambda-tesseract library that we made open-source.
