Holistics vs Tableau: What are the differences?

Key Differences between Holistics and Tableau

Holistics and Tableau are both powerful data visualization and business intelligence tools that provide insights based on data analysis. However, there are several key differences between the two platforms:

  1. Pricing Model: Holistics adopts a subscription-based pricing model, offering various plans tailored to different user needs. In contrast, Tableau follows a more traditional approach, where users purchase licenses based on the number of users or the server's computing power.

  2. Ease of Use and Learning Curve: Tableau is known for its user-friendly interface, which allows users to quickly create and customize visualizations without extensive technical knowledge. On the other hand, Holistics is designed for data professionals and analysts, offering more powerful data modeling and transformation capabilities, but with a steeper learning curve.

  3. Data Source Connectivity: Tableau provides robust connectivity options, including direct connections to various data sources such as databases, spreadsheets, and online services. In comparison, Holistics specializes in accessing data directly from databases, particularly SQL-based sources, offering advanced query capabilities and data transformations.

  4. Collaboration and Sharing: Tableau emphasizes collaboration and sharing capabilities, allowing users to publish and share dashboards, reports, and visualizations with colleagues and stakeholders. Holistics also supports collaboration but focuses more on sharing SQL data models, data reports, and insights via its web-based interface.

  5. Data Governance and Security: Tableau offers comprehensive data governance features, allowing administrators to control access, permissions, and define data-level security rules. Holistics also provides similar features but is more focused on providing self-service data access and analysis capabilities to business users.

  6. Customization and Extensibility: Tableau provides a wide range of visual customization options, allowing users to create highly interactive dashboards, incorporating custom scripting, and embedding visualizations in other software applications. Holistics offers less built-in visualization customization but provides flexibility through customizable SQL queries for data modeling and transformations.

In summary, the key differences between Holistics and Tableau lie in their pricing models, ease of use, data source connectivity, collaboration features, data governance, and customization options. Holistics caters more to data professionals seeking powerful data modeling capabilities, while Tableau focuses on ease of use and collaboration for a broader range of users.

Decisions about Holistics and Tableau

Very easy-to-use UI. Good way to make data available inside the company for analysis.

Has some built-in visualizations and can be easily integrated with other JS visualization libraries such as D3.

Can be embedded into product to provide reporting functions.

Support team are helpful.

The only complain I have is lack of API support. Hard to track changes as codes and automate report deployment.

Power BI is really easy to start with. If you have just several Excel sheets or CSV files, or you build your first automated pipeline, it is actually quite intuitive to build your first reports.

And as we have kept growing, all the additional features and tools were just there within the Azure platform and/or Office 365.

Since we started building Mews, we have already passed several milestones in becoming start up, later also a scale up company and now getting ready to grow even further, and during all these phases Power BI was just the right tool for us.
