Amazon SNS vs BulkSMS: What are the differences?

Introduction

Amazon SNS and BulkSMS are both messaging services that allow users to send messages to their customers or subscribers. However, they have key differences that set them apart from each other.

  1. Delivery Channels:

Amazon SNS: It supports multiple delivery channels such as SMS, email, and push notifications. This allows users to reach their audience through various mediums.

BulkSMS: It focuses mainly on SMS delivery and does not provide support for other delivery channels. Users can only send messages via SMS.

  2. Scalability:

Amazon SNS: It is highly scalable and can handle a large volume of messages. It can automatically scale based on the load and requirements of the user.

BulkSMS: While it can handle a reasonable volume of messages, it may have limitations when it comes to scaling up to handle sudden spikes in message traffic.

  3. Message Personalization:

Amazon SNS: It provides flexibility in personalizing messages by allowing users to include dynamic parameters, such as recipient names, in the message content.

BulkSMS: It may not offer advanced personalization features like dynamic parameters, making it difficult to tailor messages to individual recipients.

  4. Message Tracking:

Amazon SNS: It offers comprehensive tracking capabilities, allowing users to monitor message delivery status, including delivery success, failures, and bounces.

BulkSMS: It may provide basic message tracking functionality, but the level of detail and reporting options may be limited compared to Amazon SNS.

  5. API Integration:

Amazon SNS: It provides a well-documented and robust API that allows seamless integration with other applications or services.

BulkSMS: It also offers an API for integration purposes, but the range of functionalities and ease of integration may vary compared to Amazon SNS.

  6. Service Availability:

Amazon SNS: It is offered as a fully managed service by Amazon Web Services (AWS), ensuring high availability and reliability.

BulkSMS: While it may provide reliable service, the availability and reliability may depend on the infrastructure and resources of the service provider.

In summary, Amazon SNS offers a wider range of delivery channels, scalability, advanced personalization, comprehensive tracking, robust API integration, and high service availability compared to BulkSMS.

Instead of Amazon SNS, which is currently being used to send outbound push notification and including SMS, we want to build the 2 Way SMS using Amazon Pinpoint. Just want to know about Pinpoint and any outstanding issues if we drop SNS since it does not support 2 Way and use Pinpoint for both incoming and outgoing flow.

Amazon Simple Notification Service makes it simple and cost-effective to push to mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire, and internet connected smart devices, as well as pushing to other distributed services. Besides pushing cloud notifications directly to mobile devices, SNS can also deliver notifications by SMS text message or email, to Simple Queue Service (SQS) queues, or to any HTTP endpoint.

BulkSMS.com is a leading SMS messaging service provider offering two-way SMS communication services. The BulkSMS gateway reaches across borders and connects to over 800 mobile network operators world-wide.

In most cases, developers can get started with Amazon SNS by using just three APIs: CreateTopic, Subscribe, and Publish. Additional APIs are available, which provide more advanced functionality.;With SNS you can publish a message once, and deliver it one or more times. So you can choose to direct unique messages to individual Apple, Google or Amazon devices, or broadcast deliveries to many mobile devices with a single publish request.;SNS allows you to group multiple recipients using topics. A topic is an “access point” for allowing recipients to dynamically subscribe for identical copies of the same notification. One topic can support deliveries to multiple endpoint types -- for example, you can group together iOS, Android and SMS recipients. When you publish once to a topic, SNS delivers appropriately formatted copies of your message to each subscriber.;Amazon SNS allows applications and end-users on different devices to receive notifications via Mobile Push notification (Apple, Google and Kindle Fire Devices), HTTP/HTTPS, Email/Email-JSON, SMS or Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) queues.;Amazon SNS provides access control mechanisms to ensure that topics and messages are secured against unauthorized access
All submissions are made using simple query parameters.;Send and receive text messages globally – view our SMS coverage table.;Reliable, proven high-volume platform, running on redundant, high availability hardware.;Receive reply messages from phones (two-way SMS), without needing dedicated numbers or any extra effort on your part.;View detailed reports of all messages sent. Messages sent or received via APIs appear with the rest of your message history.;Mobile Originating (MO) reply messages and delivery reports (status reports) are pushed to a URL of your choice.;Language-neutral: being HTTP-based, integration is possible from almost any language (PHP, C#, Java, Perl, etc.);Unicode SMS support (70 characters in length).;Concatenated message support (messages longer than 160 characters).;Support for binary messages (WAP Push, vCards, etc.)
