DBeaver vs Navicat: What are the differences?

Key Differences Between DBeaver and Navicat

DBeaver and Navicat are both popular database management tools, but there are some key differences between them.

  1. Price: DBeaver is an open-source tool and is available for free, while Navicat is a commercial tool that requires a license for full functionality.

  2. Supported Databases: DBeaver supports a wide range of databases, including popular ones like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server, as well as less common ones like MongoDB and Cassandra. Navicat also supports a variety of databases, but it may have limited support for certain less common or niche databases.

  3. User Interface: DBeaver has a straightforward and simple user interface, making it easy for beginners to use. Navicat, on the other hand, offers a more polished and visually appealing interface with advanced features, making it suitable for experienced users.

  4. Cross-Platform Compatibility: DBeaver is a cross-platform tool and can be used on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Navicat is also available for multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  5. Collaboration Features: Navicat provides advanced collaboration features, such as real-time data synchronization and team collaboration tools, making it a suitable choice for teams working on the same database. DBeaver, on the other hand, may have limited collaboration features.

  6. Data Modeling and Design Tools: Navicat offers comprehensive data modeling and design tools, allowing users to visually create and modify database structures. DBeaver may have limited or basic data modeling capabilities.

In summary, the key differences between DBeaver and Navicat lie in the price, supported databases, user interface, cross-platform compatibility, collaboration features, and data modeling tools.

Decisions about DBeaver and Navicat
Adam Taylor

We were looking a tool that would allow us to do MySQL and PostgreSQL development/administration from a single tool. We decided on Navicat Premium because it can connect to MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQLite databases - and simultaneously. It's also compatible with Amazon RDS and Microsoft Azure, which we also use.

Moreover, we previously experienced the occasional freezing and crashing in MySQL Workbench. It also suffered from a poor design, with certain features being a bit difficult to find. Meanwhile, phpMyAdmin lacked schema visualization tools and seemed better suited to lightweight day to day transactions than some of the big jobs that we needed to do.
