Docker vs Spacemacs: What are the differences?

What is Docker? Enterprise Container Platform for High-Velocity Innovation. The Docker Platform is the industry-leading container platform for continuous, high-velocity innovation, enabling organizations to seamlessly build and share any application — from legacy to what comes next — and securely run them anywhere.

What is Spacemacs? Emacs advanced Kit focused on Evil: The best editor is neither Emacs nor Vim, it's Emacs and Vim!. Since version 0.101.0 and later Spacemacs totally abolishes the frontiers between Vim and Emacs. The user can now choose his/her preferred editing style and enjoy all the Spacemacs features Even better, it is possible to dynamically switch between the two styles seamlessly which makes it possible for programmers with different styles to do seat pair programming using the same editor..

Docker belongs to "Virtual Machine Platforms & Containers" category of the tech stack, while Spacemacs can be primarily classified under "Tools for Text Editors".

Some of the features offered by Docker are:

  • Integrated developer tools
  • open, portable images
  • shareable, reusable apps

On the other hand, Spacemacs provides the following key features:

  • Batteries Included
  • Nice UI
  • Excellent ergonomics

"Rapid integration and build up" is the top reason why over 816 developers like Docker, while over 11 developers mention "Advanced support for Vim key bindings" as the leading cause for choosing Spacemacs.

Docker and Spacemacs are both open source tools. Docker with 54K GitHub stars and 15.6K forks on GitHub appears to be more popular than Spacemacs with 18.1K GitHub stars and 4.45K GitHub forks.

Spotify, Pinterest, and Twitter are some of the popular companies that use Docker, whereas Spacemacs is used by Agworld Pty, untapt, and Curbside. Docker has a broader approval, being mentioned in 3524 company stacks & 3444 developers stacks; compared to Spacemacs, which is listed in 6 company stacks and 15 developer stacks.

Advice on Docker, Spacemacs

Decided

lxd/lxc and Docker aren't congruent so this comparison needs a more detailed look; but in short I can say: the lxd-integrated administration of storage including zfs with its snapshot capabilities as well as the system container (multi-process) approach of lxc vs. the limited single-process container approach of Docker is the main reason I chose lxd over Docker.

What are some alternatives to Docker, Spacemacs?

LXD

LXD

LXD isn't a rewrite of LXC, in fact it's building on top of LXC to provide a new, better user experience. Under the hood, LXD uses LXC through liblxc and its Go binding to create and manage the containers. It's basically an alternative to LXC's tools and distribution template system with the added features that come from being controllable over the network.

ReSharper

ReSharper

It is a popular developer productivity extension for Microsoft Visual Studio. It automates most of what can be automated in your coding routines. It finds compiler errors, runtime errors, redundancies, and code smells right as you type, suggesting intelligent corrections for them.

LXC

LXC

LXC is a userspace interface for the Linux kernel containment features. Through a powerful API and simple tools, it lets Linux users easily create and manage system or application containers.

SpaceVim

SpaceVim

SpaceVim is a Modular configuration, a bundle of custom settings and plugins, for Vim. It got inspired by spacemacs.

Vim-Plug

Vim-Plug

A minimalist Vim plugin manager.

Kite

Kite

Your editor and web browser don't know anything about each other, which is why you end up continuously switching between them. Kite bridges that gap, bringing an internet-connected programming experience right alongside your editor.

rkt

rkt

Rocket is a cli for running App Containers. The goal of rocket is to be composable, secure, and fast.

GitSavvy

GitSavvy

Full git and GitHub integration with Sublime Text 3.

Vagrant Cloud

Vagrant Cloud

Vagrant Cloud pairs with Vagrant to enable access, insight and collaboration across teams, as well as to bring exposure to community contributions and development environments.

pathogen.vim

pathogen.vim

Manage your 'runtimepath' with ease. In practical terms, pathogen.vim makes it super easy to install plugins and runtime files in their own private directories.
