Forge vs GitHub Pages: What are the differences?

Introduction

In this Markdown code, we will explore the key differences between Forge and GitHub Pages in a concise and specific manner.

  1. Pricing Model: Forge offers a paid subscription model (starting at $15/month) and charges for the number of deployments and team members. On the other hand, GitHub Pages is free for hosting basic static websites and has no limitations on the number of deployments or team members.

  2. Code Collaboration: Forge focuses primarily on collaboration features such as code reviews, pull requests, and project management tools. GitHub Pages, on the other hand, provides a platform for hosting static websites, but lacks comprehensive collaboration tools like those found in Forge.

  3. Native Integrations: Forge provides native integrations with popular tools such as GitHub, Bitbucket, and GitLab, allowing seamless integration with existing workflows. GitHub Pages, being a part of GitHub, offers seamless integration with the repository management features of GitHub itself.

  4. Deployment Options: Forge supports a variety of deployment options, including native integrations with cloud hosting providers like AWS, Azure, and DigitalOcean. GitHub Pages, in contrast, is specifically designed for hosting static websites and provides only limited deployment options.

  5. Customization and Flexibility: Forge offers more flexibility in terms of customization, allowing users to fully modify the appearance and behavior of their applications. GitHub Pages, being primarily a hosting service for static websites, has limited customization options and is more focused on simplicity and ease of use.

  6. Built-in Continuous Integration (CI): Forge includes built-in CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) features, allowing developers to automate their deployment workflows. GitHub Pages, on the other hand, does not provide built-in CI/CD features and requires external tools or scripts for automating deployments.

In summary, Forge offers a paid subscription model with extensive collaboration tools, native integrations, and flexible deployment options, while GitHub Pages is a free hosting service for static websites with seamless GitHub integration, simplicity in customization, and limited deployment options.

We use Netlify to host static websites.

The reasons for choosing Netlify over GitHub Pages are as follows:

  • Netfily can bind multiple domain names, while GitHub Pages can only bind one domain name
  • With Netfily, the original repository can be private, while GitHub Pages free tier requires the original repository to be public

In addition, in order to use CDN, we use Netlify DNS.
