GoDaddy vs OpenStreetMap: What are the differences?

What is GoDaddy? The Web's largest hosting and domain registration provider. Go Daddy makes registering Domain Names fast, simple, and affordable.

What is OpenStreetMap? The free editable map of the whole world. OpenStreetMap is built by a community of mappers that contribute and maintain data about roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world.

GoDaddy can be classified as a tool in the "Domain Registration" category, while OpenStreetMap is grouped under "Mapping APIs".

Some of the features offered by GoDaddy are:

  • Private Registration- Keeps your personal information private, protecting you from spam, scams and worse.
  • GeoDomainMap Tool- Quickly search for and register all the available domain names for a particular area or region (e.g. CedarRapidsCreativeWriters.com).
  • Internationalized Domain Names (IDN)- Register .COM, .NET, .ORG and other popular domain names in any one of over 100 native languages, ranging from Afrikaans to Vietnamese. Search using English or native character sets.

On the other hand, OpenStreetMap provides the following key features:

  • Local Knowledge
  • Community Driven
  • Open Data

"Flexible payment methods for domains " is the primary reason why developers consider GoDaddy over the competitors, whereas "Simple" was stated as the key factor in picking OpenStreetMap.

Advice on GoDaddy, OpenStreetMap

Needs advice

From a StackShare Community member: "We're a team of two starting to write a mobile app. The app will heavily rely on maps and this is where my partner and I are not seeing eye-to-eye. I would like to go with an open source solution like OpenStreetMap that is used by Apple & Foursquare. He would like to go with Google Maps since more apps use it and has better support (according to him). Mapbox is also an option but I don’t know much about it."
