JavaCC vs JavaMelody: What are the differences?

JavaCC: A parser generator for use with Java applications. It is the most popular parser generator for use with Java applications. In addition to the parser generator itself, it provides other standard capabilities related to parser generation such as tree building (via a tool called JJTree included with JavaCC), actions and debugging; JavaMelody: Monitoring of JavaEE applications. It is used to monitor Java or Java EE application servers in QA and production environments It is not a tool to simulate requests from users, it is a tool to measure and calculate statistics on real operation of an application depending on the usage of the application by users. It is mainly based on statistics of requests and on evolution charts..

JavaCC and JavaMelody belong to "Java Tools" category of the tech stack.

Some of the features offered by JavaCC are:

  • Generates parsers that are 100% pure Java, so there is no runtime dependency on JavaCC and no special porting effort required to run on different machine platforms
  • Lexical specifications can define tokens not to be case-sensitive either at the global level for the entire lexical specification, or on an individual lexical specification basis
  • Comes with JJTree, an extremely powerful tree building pre-processor

On the other hand, JavaMelody provides the following key features:

  • give facts about the average response times and number of executions
  • make decisions when trends are bad, before problems become too serious
  • optimize based on the more limiting response times

JavaCC is an open source tool with 515 GitHub stars and 121 GitHub forks. Here's a link to JavaCC's open source repository on GitHub.
