KeePassXC vs KeyCat: What are the differences?
Developers describe KeePassXC as "A free and open-source password manager". It is a cross-platform community-driven port of the Windows application “Keepass Password Safe”. It can store your passwords safely and auto-type them into your everyday websites and applications. On the other hand, KeyCat is detailed as "A self-hosted end-to-end encrypted password manager". It is an open-source end-to-end encrypted password manager. It can manage all your credentials and lets you share them with others. The idea is to make a password manager that can work offline and sync when there's a connection available to the server. Like an auto-sync keepass.
KeePassXC and KeyCat can be primarily classified as "Password Management" tools.
Some of the features offered by KeePassXC are:
- Auto-Type on all three major platforms (Linux, Windows, macOS)
- Twofish encryption
- YubiKey challenge-response support
On the other hand, KeyCat provides the following key features:
- Everything is encrypted end-to-end using NaCL via tweetnacl.js
- Single executable for the server
- Can import from keepass (v.3 for now)
KeyCat is an open source tool with 108 GitHub stars and 5 GitHub forks. Here's a link to KeyCat's open source repository on GitHub.
