Bubble vs Squarespace: What are the differences?

Introduction

This Markdown code provides a comparison between two website building platforms, Bubble and Squarespace. It highlights key differences between the two platforms in a concise and specific manner.

  1. Customizability: Bubble offers a highly customizable platform where users can design and build complex web applications with ease. From the layout to the functionality, users have complete control over the design and behavior of their websites. On the other hand, Squarespace provides limited customization options, especially for those who want to go beyond the pre-designed templates and make significant modifications to their websites.

  2. Code vs. No-Code: Bubble is a no-code platform that allows users to build fully functional web applications without writing any code. Its visual programming interface makes it accessible to users with no coding experience. In contrast, Squarespace caters to both non-technical users with its drag-and-drop website builder and developers who can modify the underlying code if desired.

  3. Scope and Scalability: Bubble is suitable for more complex and scalable web applications. It supports the creation of dynamic website elements, workflows, and integrations with external services, making it a powerful tool for building advanced applications. Squarespace, on the other hand, is more focused on simplicity and ease of use, making it a better choice for smaller websites or blogs.

  4. Pricing and Hosting: Bubble offers a free plan with limited features and paid plans starting at a higher price point. It also provides the option to self-host Bubble applications. Comparatively, Squarespace offers a range of pricing plans, including lower-priced options for basic websites, as well as higher-priced plans for e-commerce and other advanced features. Squarespace takes care of the hosting for all its websites.

  5. E-commerce Capabilities: Squarespace has a strong emphasis on e-commerce functionality and provides features like built-in online store templates, inventory management, and payment gateway integrations. Bubble, on the other hand, does not offer dedicated e-commerce capabilities out-of-the-box, although it can be customized to build complex e-commerce solutions with the right configurations and integrations.

  6. Community and Support: Squarespace has a large and active user community, along with comprehensive documentation and customer support. It also provides access to a vast marketplace of pre-designed templates and plugins. Bubble has a growing community but comparatively smaller, with limited pre-built resources. However, Bubble offers responsive support and has active forums for user interaction.

In summary, Bubble stands out with its highly customizable and no-code approach, suitable for complex web applications, while Squarespace focuses on simplicity, e-commerce functionality, and an extensive community and support ecosystem.

Advice on Squarespace, Bubble

Decided

I usually take a slightly different tack because the technical level of people I usually am dealing with is lower. I tend to be pitching to decision makers and not tech people. A bit of my standard answer is below.

Wix and Squarespace are proprietary systems meant for unsophisticated users who want to build their own websites quickly and easily. While they are good for that specific use case, they do not offer any way to move beyond that if your needs arise. Since they are proprietary closed systems if you need something more advanced at some point your only option is to start over.

WordPress is an Open Source CMS that allows much more freedom. It is not quite as simple to setup and create a new site but if you are talking to me then you are not looking to build it yourself so that is really a non-issue. The main benefit of WordPress is freedom. You can host it on virtually any decent web hosting service and since it uses PHP and MySQL you can have virtually any developer take over a project without problem.

I believe in open source because of that freedom. It is good for me as a developer and it is good for my clients. If something were to happen to me or my company you would have no problem finding another qualified WordPress developer to take over the site in a totally seamless fashion. There would be no need to start from scratch.

Additionally the extensible nature of WordPress means that no matter what your future needs, WordPress can handle it. Adding things like e-commerce and custom quoting systems are just two examples of advanced solution's that I have added to WordPress sites years after they were first built.

WordPress is used by tiny one person businesses all the way up to major websites like the NY Times and I think it is right for this project as well.
