CLion vs PhpStorm: What are the differences?

Introduction: This markdown provides key differences between CLion and PhpStorm in a website-friendly format.

  1. Language Support: CLion is primarily focused on C and C++ development, while PhpStorm is specifically designed for PHP development. PhpStorm also supports web development languages such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

  2. Integrations: CLion integrates well with CMake build system, version control systems like Git, and various testing frameworks. On the other hand, PhpStorm has strong integrations with tools like Composer for PHP dependency management, Docker for containerization, and PHPUnit for testing.

  3. Code Assistance: CLion provides advanced code assistance for C and C++ languages, including code completion, code analysis, and refactoring tools. PhpStorm offers similar code assistance but tailored specifically for PHP development, including features like smart code completion, code navigation, and parameter hints.

  4. Debugging Capabilities: CLion offers robust debugging capabilities for C and C++ applications, with support for GDB, LLDB, and CMake configurations. PhpStorm also provides powerful debugging tools for PHP applications, including Xdebug integration and features like breakpoints, step-by-step execution, and variable monitoring.

  5. Web Development Features: PhpStorm comes with built-in support for web development technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with features such as live editing, Emmet integration, and code refactoring tools. While CLion does offer some limited support for web development, it is not as comprehensive as PhpStorm's features.

  6. User Interface: CLion has a more customizable and flexible user interface tailored for C and C++ developers, with features like code editor themes, vertical and horizontal split views, and different color schemes. PhpStorm, on the other hand, provides a user-friendly interface optimized for PHP developers, with features like quick navigation, intelligent code formatting, and customizable shortcuts.

In Summary, CLion and PhpStorm have key differences in language support, integrations, code assistance, debugging capabilities, web development features, and user interface customization.

Advice on CLion, PhpStorm

Needs adviceonVisual Studio CodeVisual Studio CodePhpStormPhpStormWebStormWebStorm

When I switched to Visual Studio Code 12 months ago from PhpStorm I was in love, it was great. However after using VS Code for a year, I see myself switching back and forth between WebStorm and VS Code. The VS Code plugins are great however I notice Prettier, auto importing of components and linking to the definitions often break, and I have to restart VS Code multiple times a week and sometimes a day.

We use Ruby here so I do like that Visual Studio Code highlights that for me out of the box, with WebStorm I'd need to probably also install RubyMine and have 2 IDE's going at the same time.

Should I stick with Visual Studio Code, or switch to something else? #help
