Amazon API Gateway vs Apiary: What are the differences?

# Key Differences between Amazon API Gateway and Apiary

Amazon API Gateway and Apiary are both popular tools used for building and managing APIs. However, there are key differences between the two that can impact your decision on which to use for your project.

1. **Integration with AWS Services**: Amazon API Gateway is tightly integrated with various AWS services, allowing for seamless connections and interactions with other components of your AWS infrastructure. On the other hand, Apiary operates independently of any cloud provider and has its own set of features for API management.

2. **Pricing Model**: Amazon API Gateway follows a pay-as-you-go pricing model, where you are charged based on the number of API calls made and data transferred. Apiary, on the other hand, offers a free tier for small projects but charges for additional features and usage beyond a certain threshold.

3. **Performance and Scalability**: Amazon API Gateway is known for its high performance and scalability, especially when dealing with a large volume of API requests. Apiary may have limitations in terms of performance and scalability as it is not directly tied to a major cloud infrastructure provider like AWS.

4. **API Documentation Tools**: Apiary is particularly known for its robust API documentation tools, making it easier for developers to understand and work with APIs. While Amazon API Gateway also provides documentation capabilities, Apiary may offer more advanced features for API documentation.

5. **Security Features**: Amazon API Gateway provides various security features, such as authentication and authorization mechanisms, to secure your APIs. Apiary may have fewer built-in security features or may require additional tools to achieve the same level of security.

6. **Customization and Flexibility**: Amazon API Gateway offers a high level of customization and flexibility, allowing you to tailor your API setup to your specific needs. Apiary may have limitations in terms of customization options and may not be as flexible in certain configurations.

In Summary, when choosing between Amazon API Gateway and Apiary, consider factors such as integration with existing infrastructure, pricing, performance, documentation, security, and customization needs to determine which tool best suits your project requirements.

From a StackShare Community member: "I just started working for a start-up and we are in desperate need of better documentation for our API. Currently our API docs is in a README.md file. We are evaluating Postman and Swagger UI. Since there are many options and I was wondering what other StackSharers would recommend?"

I use Postman because of the ease of team-management, using workspaces and teams, runner, collections, environment variables, test-scripts (post execution), variable management (pre and post execution), folders (inside collections, for better management of APIs), newman, easy-ci-integration (and probably a few more things that I am not able to recall right now).

I use Swagger UI because it's an easy tool for end-consumers to visualize and test our APIs. It focuses on that ! And it's directly embedded and delivered with the APIs. Postman's built-in tools aren't bad, but their main focus isn't the documentation and also, they are hosted outside the project.

I recommend Postman because it's easy to use with history option. Also, it has very great features like runner, collections, test scripts runners, defining environment variables and simple exporting and importing data.
