Amazon Glacier vs Google Cloud Storage: What are the differences?
Introduction
This markdown provides a comparison between Amazon Glacier and Google Cloud Storage, highlighting the key differences between the two services.
Data Storage and Retrieval: Amazon Glacier is designed for long-term archival storage with infrequent data retrieval, whereas Google Cloud Storage focuses on general-purpose object storage with fast and frequent access to data. Glacier offers reduced cost storage options for data that is accessed rarely, while Google Cloud Storage provides different storage classes for various performance and cost requirements.
Pricing Structure: Amazon Glacier employs a unique pricing model based on the amount of data stored, the number of requests made, and the data transfer out of Glacier. Google Cloud Storage, on the other hand, offers simpler pricing based on storage used, network egress, and retrieval and early deletion fees. Understanding the specific pricing structure of each service is crucial for planning and managing costs effectively.
Retrieval Times: When it comes to retrieving data, Amazon Glacier has longer retrieval times compared to Google Cloud Storage. Glacier's retrieval times can range from several minutes to hours, depending on the retrieval options selected. In contrast, Google Cloud Storage offers faster retrieval times for most storage classes, ensuring quicker access to the data stored.
Data Durability and Redundancy: Both Glacier and Google Cloud Storage provide high durability and redundancy for data protection. However, Amazon Glacier offers eleven nines (99.999999999%) durability per object stored, which makes it highly reliable for long-term archival needs. Google Cloud Storage guarantees at least eleven nines (99.999999999%) durability for regional and multi-regional storage classes.
Integration with Other Services: Amazon Glacier integrates seamlessly with other Amazon Web Services (AWS) and supports robust data lifecycle management through policies, notifications, and APIs. Google Cloud Storage integrates well with the entire Google Cloud Platform ecosystem, enabling users to leverage various services like BigQuery, Machine Learning, and Data Analytics for data processing and analysis.
Data Transfer Options: Google Cloud Storage provides an advantage in terms of data transfer options. It offers a wide range of tools and services, such as Transfer Service, Storage Transfer Service, and gsutil command-line tool, to facilitate the migration of data from on-premises, other cloud platforms, or from one Google Cloud Storage bucket to another. This simplifies the data transfer process and enhances data mobility.
In Summary, Amazon Glacier and Google Cloud Storage differ in terms of data storage and retrieval approach, pricing structure, retrieval times, data durability and redundancy, integration with other services, and data transfer options. Understanding these differences is essential in choosing the right storage solution for specific needs.
We choose Backblaze B2 because it makes more sense for storing static assets.
We admire Backblaze's customer service & transparency, plus, we trust them to maintain fair business practices - including not raising prices in the future.
Lower storage costs means we can keep more data for longer, and lower bandwidth means cache misses don't cost a ton.
We offer our customer HIPAA compliant storage. After analyzing the market, we decided to go with Google Storage. The Nodejs API is ok, still not ES6 and can be very confusing to use. For each new customer, we created a different bucket so they can have individual data and not have to worry about data loss. After 1000+ customers we started seeing many problems with the creation of new buckets, with saving or retrieving a new file. Many false positive: the Promise returned ok, but in reality, it failed.
That's why we switched to S3 that just works.
