Gitea vs Perforce: What are the differences?

## Introduction
In this comparison, we will highlight key differences between Gitea and Perforce, two popular version control systems used in software development.

1. **Scalability**: Gitea is known for its lightweight and efficient architecture, making it ideal for small to medium-sized teams and projects. In contrast, Perforce is often preferred for large-scale enterprise applications due to its robust scalability features and support for high traffic volumes.

2. **Supported Version Control Protocols**: Gitea primarily supports Git as its version control system, offering features tailored to Git repositories. On the other hand, Perforce utilizes its proprietary version control system known as Helix Core, which provides unique functionality not available in Git.

3. **Open Source vs. Proprietary**: Gitea is an open-source platform, meaning users have access to the source code, can modify it, and contribute to the community. Perforce, on the other hand, is a proprietary software with licensing fees and restrictions on source code access and modification.

4. **Community Support**: Gitea benefits from a thriving open-source community that actively contributes to its development, provides support, and offers a wide range of plugins and extensions. In comparison, Perforce users rely on official technical support from the company, which can be advantageous for enterprises seeking dedicated assistance.

5. **User Interface**: Gitea is known for its user-friendly and intuitive interface, making it easy for developers of all levels to navigate and utilize its features efficiently. Perforce, while feature-rich, may have a steeper learning curve for new users due to its complex interface and extensive functionalities.

6. **Integration Capabilities**: Gitea offers seamless integration with various third-party tools and services such as issue trackers, CI/CD pipelines, and project management software, enhancing its versatility and adaptability within development workflows. Perforce, while supporting integrations, may require additional configurations and customization to achieve the same level of seamless integration as Gitea.

In Summary, Gitea and Perforce differ in terms of scalability, supported version control protocols, open-source vs. proprietary nature, community support, user interface, and integration capabilities.

Out of most of the VCS solutions out there, we found Gitlab was the most feature complete with a free community edition. Their DevSecops offering is also a very robust solution. Gitlab CI/CD was quite easy to setup and the direct integration with your VCS + CI/CD is also a bonus. Out of the box integration with major cloud providers, alerting through instant messages etc. are all extremely convenient. We push our CI/CD updates to MS Teams.
