We are currently working on the development of a National Data Repository Analytics Workspace for Nigeria. During the choice of a BI tool, I recommended Apache Superset over Power BI but those used to Power BI kicked against it. I led the team that built the analytic Workspace that will be launched sometime in August of this year.
From my above intro, I will first of all recommend you know what you want the BI tool to do for you and that will lead to a better recommendation. As for me, I have not worked with Metabase but have worked with Apache Superset which has all the features you mentioned. It allows drill down, drag and drop, customizable charts, customizable UI/UX, performing some SQL analytics, etc. We have just upgraded to the latest Apache Superset version with enormous features. The community is wonder in terms of support, the Slack also provides supports within the shortest time.
I have never used Superset, but it is an Apache project and doesn't come with support, and you will need to find a third-party company to help with any issues you have with it. If you are using this for a commercial project, I'd advise that you use Metabase since you can always reach out to their team to get support with it. For a personal project, I have used Metabase in the past and can attest to its great user experience.
