PayPal vs Zoho Subscriptions: What are the differences?

Introduction: PayPal and Zoho Subscriptions are two popular platforms that offer different services to businesses and individuals. Understanding the key differences between these platforms is crucial for choosing the right fit for your specific needs.

  1. Integration with E-commerce Platforms: PayPal is mainly known for its seamless integration with various e-commerce platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento. It provides a straightforward payment gateway solution that allows businesses to accept payments from customers. On the other hand, Zoho Subscriptions focuses on providing subscription management tools, enabling businesses to manage recurring payments and subscriptions effectively.

  2. Payment Processing Fees: When it comes to payment processing fees, there is a notable difference between PayPal and Zoho Subscriptions. PayPal charges a percentage-based fee on each transaction, which varies depending on factors such as the country and currency involved. In contrast, Zoho Subscriptions offers a fixed monthly pricing structure, making it more predictable for businesses with high transaction volumes.

  3. Invoicing and Billing: PayPal provides users with the ability to create and send invoices through their platform. It offers various customization options, including adding company logos and personalization. Conversely, Zoho Subscriptions specializes in automated subscription billing and invoicing. It provides businesses with the flexibility to create customized subscription plans and automate recurring billing processes effortlessly.

  4. Customer Support and Resources: PayPal offers extensive customer support options, including a dedicated support center, forums, and phone support. Additionally, it provides comprehensive documentation and resources to assist users in setting up and troubleshooting issues. On the other hand, Zoho Subscriptions also offers a support center and documentation but is known for its extensive customer support through live chat and phone support, ensuring prompt assistance whenever needed.

  5. Tax Management: Zoho Subscriptions handles tax management more comprehensively compared to PayPal. Zoho Subscriptions allows businesses to define tax rules and apply them to specific products or services based on the customer's location and tax regulations. With PayPal, on the other hand, businesses may need to rely on third-party integrations or manual adjustments to properly handle taxes.

  6. Customization and Branding: PayPal offers limited customization and branding options for businesses. While it allows some basic customization of the payment page, there are limitations to branding it as per business requirements. In contrast, Zoho Subscriptions offers extensive customization options, enabling businesses to fully align the subscription management and billing processes with their brand identity.

In summary, PayPal primarily focuses on providing a robust payment gateway solution with e-commerce platform integration, while Zoho Subscriptions specializes in subscription management, recurring billing automation, and comprehensive tax management solutions. The choice between these platforms depends on the specific needs and priorities of businesses.

We use GoCardless to simplify the way clients and partners pay for our services. What intrigued us is the quick and easy ACH feature that gives our clients the option to log in with their bank account and shoot the funds directly to our account. The fee, compared to Stripe is less. Stripe and PayPal charge 2.9% + 30c and Stripe also forces the client to enter in all of their payment details manually and then if the payment doesn't work, the client has to try all over again. GoCardless charges 1% + 25c which is much more reasonable dealing with the large projects that we are currently working on.

We integrate GoCardless with Xero to easily send out quick invoices, receive the funds and track all revenue in one place.
