FastSpring vs PayPal: What are the differences?

Introduction

In this article, we will explore the key differences between FastSpring and PayPal as online payment platforms. Both FastSpring and PayPal are widely popular and trusted payment systems that offer various features and services to facilitate online transactions. However, there are notable differences between the two platforms that may influence one's choice for their business needs.

  1. Payment Options: FastSpring provides a range of payment options, including credit and debit cards, PayPal, Amazon Pay, and bank transfers. On the other hand, PayPal primarily focuses on PayPal account payments, but it also supports credit and debit cards. FastSpring offers a more diverse selection of payment options, catering to a wider audience.

  2. Checkout Process: FastSpring's checkout process is optimized for conversion rates and can be customized to match the merchant's branding. It offers a streamlined experience, with minimal distractions for customers. In contrast, PayPal's checkout process is relatively standardized, as customers are redirected to the PayPal website for payment processing. This can result in a slightly longer and potentially less seamless checkout experience.

  3. International Support: FastSpring has extensive support for international transactions, including multi-currency pricing, tax calculations, and localized checkout experiences. It enables businesses to sell their products globally with ease. PayPal also supports international transactions and multiple currencies but may not provide the same level of localization options as FastSpring.

  4. Subscription Management: FastSpring offers advanced subscription management tools, allowing businesses to easily manage recurring billing, trial periods, and plan upgrades or downgrades. PayPal also supports subscriptions but may not provide the same level of flexibility and customization as FastSpring. FastSpring's subscription tools are specifically designed for software and digital products.

  5. Merchant Account vs. Payment Gateway: FastSpring acts both as a merchant account and payment gateway, meaning merchants can process payments directly without the need for additional third-party services. PayPal, on the other hand, primarily functions as a payment gateway, requiring users to have a separate merchant account to process payments. FastSpring offers an all-in-one solution, simplifying the payment process for merchants.

  6. E-commerce Integration: FastSpring provides integration with a wide range of popular e-commerce platforms, such as Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce, offering seamless integration for merchants. PayPal also integrates with various e-commerce platforms but may not have the same level of flexibility and ease of integration as FastSpring.

In summary, FastSpring and PayPal differ in payment options, checkout processes, international support, subscription management, merchant account capabilities, and e-commerce integration. Each platform has its own strengths and features that cater to different business needs and preferences.

We use GoCardless to simplify the way clients and partners pay for our services. What intrigued us is the quick and easy ACH feature that gives our clients the option to log in with their bank account and shoot the funds directly to our account. The fee, compared to Stripe is less. Stripe and PayPal charge 2.9% + 30c and Stripe also forces the client to enter in all of their payment details manually and then if the payment doesn't work, the client has to try all over again. GoCardless charges 1% + 25c which is much more reasonable dealing with the large projects that we are currently working on.

We integrate GoCardless with Xero to easily send out quick invoices, receive the funds and track all revenue in one place.
