Git vs Magit: What are the differences?
Developers describe Git as "Fast, scalable, distributed revision control system". Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. On the other hand, Magit is detailed as "It's Magit! A Git Porcelain inside Emacs". Magit is an interface to the version control system Git, implemented as an Emacs package. Magit aspires to be a complete Git porcelain. While we cannot (yet) claim that Magit wraps and improves upon each and every Git command, it is complete enough to allow even experienced Git users to perform almost all of their daily version control tasks directly from within Emacs. While many fine Git clients exist, only Magit and Git itself deserve to be called porcelains.
Git and Magit can be primarily classified as "Version Control System" tools.
Git and Magit are both open source tools. Git with 28.6K GitHub stars and 16.5K forks on GitHub appears to be more popular than Magit with 4.09K GitHub stars and 599 GitHub forks.
