Gitea vs OneDev: What are the differences?

Differences Between Gitea and OneDev

Gitea and OneDev are two popular software solutions used for hosting and managing Git repositories. While both provide similar functionalities, there are key differences that set them apart.

  1. User Interface: Gitea offers a clean and intuitive user interface, making it easy for users to navigate through repositories and perform actions. On the other hand, OneDev provides a more comprehensive and feature-rich interface, with advanced options for managing repositories and projects.

  2. Integration Capabilities: Gitea offers a wide range of integrations with popular tools and services, allowing seamless collaboration and automation with external systems. OneDev, on the other hand, has limited integration options, which may affect the overall workflow and productivity for users requiring extensive integrations.

  3. Permission Management: Gitea provides a flexible permission management system, allowing administrators to control access rights at various levels, such as repositories, teams, and organizations. OneDev also offers a similar permission management feature, but with less granularity and customization options compared to Gitea.

  4. Built-in CI/CD: OneDev has a strong focus on Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) and provides built-in capabilities for automating build, test, and deployment processes. Gitea, on the other hand, does not have native support for CI/CD and requires integration with other tools or services for achieving similar functionalities.

  5. Issue Tracking: Gitea provides a basic issue tracking feature that allows users to create and manage issues associated with repositories. OneDev, however, offers a more advanced and customizable issue tracking system with features like custom fields, workflows, and issue dependency management.

  6. Extensibility: Gitea offers a range of plugins and extensions that users can leverage to extend the functionality of the platform. OneDev, on the other hand, has a more closed architecture and does not provide as many options for customizing or extending the platform.

In summary, Gitea offers a user-friendly interface, strong integration capabilities, and flexibility in permission management, while OneDev focuses on advanced features like built-in CI/CD, customizable issue tracking, and extensibility options. The choice between Gitea and OneDev depends on the specific requirements and priorities of the user or organization.

Out of most of the VCS solutions out there, we found Gitlab was the most feature complete with a free community edition. Their DevSecops offering is also a very robust solution. Gitlab CI/CD was quite easy to setup and the direct integration with your VCS + CI/CD is also a bonus. Out of the box integration with major cloud providers, alerting through instant messages etc. are all extremely convenient. We push our CI/CD updates to MS Teams.
