Razorpay vs Stripe: What are the differences?

Key Differences between Razorpay and Stripe

Razorpay and Stripe are both popular payment gateway solutions that cater to different aspects of online payments. Here are the key differences between the two:

  1. Integration Complexity: While both Razorpay and Stripe offer robust APIs and plugins for easy integration, Stripe is often considered more developer-friendly due to its clear documentation, comprehensive toolkits, and extensive community support. Razorpay, on the other hand, may require additional effort for integration and customization.

  2. Geographical Coverage: Stripe is available in over 40 countries, including major markets like the United States and Europe. In comparison, Razorpay primarily serves businesses in India and offers limited international coverage. So, if your business operates globally, Stripe may be a better choice.

  3. Payment Types: Stripe supports a wide range of payment types, including credit/debit cards, digital wallets, ACH transfers, and alternative payment methods. In contrast, Razorpay's focus is primarily on card payments, UPI transfers, and net banking within the Indian market. Therefore, if you require broader support for multiple payment options, Stripe may be more suitable.

  4. Pricing Structure: Razorpay follows a flat pricing model, charging a fixed percentage fee for each transaction, with different rates for Indian and international cards. On the other hand, Stripe offers more flexible pricing options, including volume-based discounts, customized plans for enterprise customers, and additional fees for specific features. So, depending on your transaction volume and requirements, one may offer more cost-effective pricing than the other.

  5. Support for Subscriptions: While both Stripe and Razorpay support recurring payments and subscriptions, Stripe's implementation is often lauded for its flexibility and advanced features. Stripe offers built-in options for managing subscription plans, proration, one-time charges, and other billing-related functionalities, making it a popular choice for businesses with subscription-based models.

  6. Mobile SDKs: Stripe provides robust mobile software development kits (SDKs) for iOS and Android platforms, enabling seamless integration of payment flows into mobile apps. Meanwhile, Razorpay's mobile SDKs are primarily focused on the Indian market, providing features like pre-built UI components, 3D Secure authentication, and payment gateway integrations specific to India.

In summary, while both Razorpay and Stripe are reliable payment gateway solutions, the key differences lie in their integration complexity, geographical coverage, payment type support, pricing structure, subscription management capabilities, and mobile SDK offerings. Choosing the right one depends on your specific business needs and target audience.

We use GoCardless to simplify the way clients and partners pay for our services. What intrigued us is the quick and easy ACH feature that gives our clients the option to log in with their bank account and shoot the funds directly to our account. The fee, compared to Stripe is less. Stripe and PayPal charge 2.9% + 30c and Stripe also forces the client to enter in all of their payment details manually and then if the payment doesn't work, the client has to try all over again. GoCardless charges 1% + 25c which is much more reasonable dealing with the large projects that we are currently working on.

We integrate GoCardless with Xero to easily send out quick invoices, receive the funds and track all revenue in one place.

With COVID-19 looming over us, businesses are, more than ever, looking for ways to set up online payments.

And having recently gone through implementing both Stripe and GoCardless to get monthly subscriptions set up and automated on my company website, I felt there was no better time to write this blog post!

If you're currently looking at working with a Payment Gateway provider API, or you're currently working with one but are not a fan, are looking to automate things a bit more, or are just generally thinking about changing, then you should have a read of my latest blog post where I compare Stripe and GoCardless.

I compare APIs in depth, specifically the subscription checkout flow that both offer (they're very similar, with some BIG differences).

There are plenty of code examples on how to set it up in a Node.js environment and right at the end, I rate each API based on the following factors:

  • API ease of use
  • API documentation
  • Payment pages
  • Costs / fees
  • Security
  • Developer appeal
  • Customer experience
  • Free Trial

So feel free to check it out, and I hope you like it. Please leave any feedback as it is very helpful. Thanks!

Stripe was made with developers in mind first so the extensibility of it is great! This makes it very easy for us to integrate and automate as much as we need with its APIs and SDK. It allows a lot of customization of exactly what we need to build our applications. They also manage all of our customers from a tax and accounting perspective which makes it easy from a business standpoint.
