Aptana Studio vs Visual Studio Code: What are the differences?

Introduction

Aptana Studio and Visual Studio Code are both popular integrated development environments (IDEs) used for web development and coding. While they share some similarities, there are key differences between the two that set them apart. In this analysis, we will examine the main differences between Aptana Studio and Visual Studio Code in various aspects.

  1. User Interface and Customization: Aptana Studio provides a more traditional IDE experience with a fully customizable interface, allowing users to arrange their workspace elements to their preference. On the other hand, Visual Studio Code offers a minimalist user interface with a focus on simplicity and efficiency, providing a clean coding environment without many distracting elements.

  2. Supported Languages and Plugins: Aptana Studio is primarily built for web development and supports various web technologies out of the box, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and Ruby. Additionally, it includes built-in support for popular frameworks like jQuery. Visual Studio Code, on the other hand, is a more versatile IDE that supports a wide range of programming languages and frameworks through the installation of plugins. It provides a rich marketplace with a vast selection of plugins to enhance the development experience across different languages.

  3. Debugging Capabilities: Aptana Studio offers robust built-in debugging capabilities for web applications along with features like breakpoints, stepping through code, and inspecting variables. Visual Studio Code also provides excellent debugging functionality but with a slightly different approach. It integrates seamlessly with debuggers for various languages and frameworks, offering a unified debugging experience across different projects.

  4. Git Integration: Visual Studio Code has excellent built-in support for Git version control system, making it easy to manage code repositories and perform common Git operations directly within the IDE. Aptana Studio, on the other hand, lacks native Git integration and requires external tools or plugins to achieve similar functionality.

  5. Extensions and Customization: Visual Studio Code is built to be highly customizable and extensible. It offers a rich ecosystem of extensions developed by both Microsoft and the community, allowing developers to enhance their coding experience with additional features, languages, and tools. Aptana Studio, while customizable, has a more limited collection of extensions available.

  6. Performance and Resource Usage: Visual Studio Code is known for its lightweight and efficient performance, consuming fewer system resources compared to Aptana Studio. This makes it a preferred choice for developers who prioritize speed and responsiveness, particularly on lower-end machines.

In summary, Aptana Studio offers a traditional IDE experience with extensive web development features, while Visual Studio Code provides a minimalist yet powerful coding environment with versatile language support and extensive customization options. Ultimately, the choice between the two IDEs depends on personal preferences, project requirements, and the targeted programming languages.

Visual Studio Code became famous over the past 3+ years I believe. The clean UI, easy to use UX and the plethora of integrations made it a very easy decision for us. Our gripe with Sublime was probably only the UX side. VSCode has not failed us till now, and still is able to support our development env without any significant effort.

Goland being paid, as well as built only for Go seemed like a significant limitation to not consider it.

I decided to choose VSCode over Sublime text for my Systems Programming class in C. What I love about VSCode is its awesome ability to add extensions. Intellisense is a beautiful debugger, and Remote SSH allows me to login and make real-time changes in VSCode to files on my university server. This is an awesome alternative to going back and forth on pushing/pulling code and logging into servers in the terminal. Great choice for anyone interested in C programming!
