Zapier vs n8n: What are the differences?

Introduction

Zapier and n8n are both powerful workflow automation tools that allow users to connect various apps and automate tasks without writing code. However, there are significant differences between the two tools that make them unique in their own ways. Let's explore the key differences between Zapier and n8n.

  1. Pricing Model: Zapier offers a subscription-based pricing model where users pay a monthly fee based on the number of tasks or automation workflows they need. On the other hand, n8n follows an open-source and self-hosted approach, allowing users to run their own n8n server for free or choose a paid cloud-hosted option. This difference in pricing models provides flexibility and cost advantages depending on specific needs and requirements.

  2. Integration Options: Zapier has an extensive library of pre-built integrations with various popular apps, making it easy to connect and automate workflows across different platforms. n8n also provides a wide range of integrations, but with a key difference - it allows users to create their custom integrations using webhooks and APIs. This flexibility in integration options makes n8n a preferred choice for users who have specific or niche app requirements.

  3. Workflow Complexity: While both Zapier and n8n allow users to create complex workflows, there are differences in the level of complexity they can handle. Zapier is known for its user-friendly interface and simplicity, making it easy for non-technical users to set up basic or intermediate workflows. n8n, on the other hand, offers a more advanced and extensible workflow automation platform, making it suitable for users with a higher degree of technical expertise who require complex and custom workflows.

  4. Execution Environment: Zapier runs all workflows on its own servers, taking care of the execution and management of automated tasks. n8n, on the other hand, allows users to choose between a self-hosted option or a cloud-hosted execution environment. Self-hosting gives users full control and ownership of their workflow execution, whereas the cloud-hosted option provides convenience and scalability without the need for managing infrastructure.

  5. Community and Support: Both Zapier and n8n have active communities and support channels, but there are differences in their community-driven development models. Zapier operates as a closed platform, discouraging external contribution to its integrations or codebase. In contrast, n8n is fully open-source and encourages community participation, allowing users to contribute to the platform's development and create custom integrations.

  6. Extensibility and Customizability: While Zapier provides a user-friendly interface and straightforward customization options, n8n takes customizability to another level. n8n allows users to create custom nodes using JavaScript, enabling them to build highly tailored and specialized workflows. This level of extensibility and customizability makes n8n a preferred choice for users who require granular control over their automation processes.

In summary, Zapier and n8n differ in terms of their pricing models, integration options, workflow complexity, execution environments, community-driven development, and extensibility. Depending on specific needs and preferences, users can choose between these tools to achieve seamless workflow automation with ease.

Hey! We are Raisegiving, a payments platform geared towards helping nonprofits raise money and manage donors. We are looking to give our Users (Admins of nonprofits) the ability to integrate their Raisegiving account with other tools such as Mailchimp and QuickBooks.

Examples of desired use cases:

  • Users should be able to sync Raisegiving audience with their Mailchimp audience, trigger the creation of a new Mailchimp audience based on data from their Raisegiving account.
  • Donations made on our platform should sync with users Quickbooks account.

Detailed Comparison

Zapier

Zapier is for busy people who know their time is better spent selling, marketing, or coding. Instead of wasting valuable time coming up with complicated systems - you can use Zapier to automate the web services you and your team are already using on a daily basis.

It is a free node based Workflow Automation Tool. Easily automate tasks accross different services. Synchronise data between different apps/databases.

A Zap is a blueprint for a task you want to do over and over. In words, a Zap looks like this: "When I get a new thing in A, do this other thing in B." The first part is the trigger and the second part is the action. An example is "When I get a new entry from a Wufoo form, create a new lead in Salesforce.";You can pick what fields from the trigger service should go to the action service and you can use static text and custom fields too. For instance, you might say that the phone number from your Wufoo form should be the work phone of your new Salesforce lead.;Zapier regularly checks your trigger for new data. When the Zap triggers, Zapier automatically performs your action for you. Continuing with the Wufoo scenario, say you receive five new entries. Zapier takes each one and makes a new lead in Salesforce, customized to the way you specified in your Zap.;Without any more effort from you, data flows from one service to the other
Free / Open Source; Create own nodes to integrate third-party services or in-house tools;Decide who gets access and where your data is stored; Automate daily tasks; React to events; Easily extendable
