Amazon Pinpoint vs OneSignal: What are the differences?

Introduction

Amazon Pinpoint and OneSignal are both popular tools used for sending notifications to users in web or mobile applications. While they serve a similar purpose, there are key differences between the two platforms that set them apart.

  1. Pricing and Scalability: Amazon Pinpoint offers pricing based on the number of messages sent, allowing users to scale their notification campaigns as needed. On the other hand, OneSignal provides a free tier with limited features and charges based on the number of subscribers. This difference in pricing models allows users to choose the option that best fits their budget and scalability requirements.

  2. Integration and Platform Support: Amazon Pinpoint is tightly integrated with other Amazon Web Services (AWS) products, making it a suitable choice for users already utilizing AWS services. OneSignal, on the other hand, offers broader platform support and can be integrated with various web and mobile platforms, including Android, iOS, Windows, and Web Push.

  3. Advanced Targeting and Personalization: Amazon Pinpoint provides advanced targeting and personalization features, allowing users to segment their audience based on factors like demographics, behavior, or user attributes. OneSignal also offers segmentation capabilities, but the level of depth and flexibility may not be as extensive as Amazon Pinpoint.

  4. Delivery Optimization: Amazon Pinpoint leverages the capabilities of the AWS infrastructure to optimize message delivery and ensure high deliverability rates. OneSignal also offers delivery optimizations, but the specific mechanisms and infrastructure used may differ, potentially affecting overall delivery rates.

  5. Built-in Analytics and Reporting: Amazon Pinpoint provides comprehensive analytics and reporting features, giving users insights into the performance of their notification campaigns. OneSignal also offers analytics capabilities but may have differences in the level of detail and reporting options available.

  6. Customization and Branding: OneSignal offers more customization options for notifications, allowing users to design and brand their notifications to align with their application's look and feel. Amazon Pinpoint also provides customization features, but the degree of flexibility and control may vary compared to OneSignal.

In summary, Amazon Pinpoint and OneSignal differ in terms of pricing and scalability, integration and platform support, advanced targeting and personalization, delivery optimization, built-in analytics and reporting, as well as customization and branding options. Users should consider these factors when choosing the right tool for their notification needs.

Instead of Amazon SNS, which is currently being used to send outbound push notification and including SMS, we want to build the 2 Way SMS using Amazon Pinpoint. Just want to know about Pinpoint and any outstanding issues if we drop SNS since it does not support 2 Way and use Pinpoint for both incoming and outgoing flow.
