Civo vs DigitalOcean: What are the differences?

Civo and DigitalOcean are two popular cloud hosting providers known for their reliable and scalable services. While both offer similar features, there are some key differences that set them apart.

  1. Pricing: Civo offers a more flexible and cost-effective pricing model compared to DigitalOcean. Civo offers a pay-as-you-go pricing structure, allowing users to only pay for the resources they use. On the other hand, DigitalOcean offers fixed monthly pricing plans, which may not be suitable for all users.

  2. Managed Kubernetes: DigitalOcean provides managed Kubernetes services, enabling users to easily deploy and manage containerized applications using Kubernetes. Civo, on the other hand, does not currently offer native managed Kubernetes services.

  3. Global Data Centers: DigitalOcean has a wider global presence with data centers located in multiple regions around the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Civo, on the other hand, currently has data centers located only in the United Kingdom and the United States.

  4. Load Balancers: DigitalOcean offers load balancers as a service, allowing users to distribute incoming traffic across multiple instances to ensure high availability and scalability. Civo, on the other hand, does not currently provide load balancer services.

  5. Object Storage: Both Civo and DigitalOcean offer object storage solutions, but with slight differences. DigitalOcean provides an offering called Spaces that allows users to store and serve large amounts of unstructured data. Civo, on the other hand, offers an object storage solution called S3-compatible Object Storage, which is compatible with existing S3-based applications.

  6. Community and Support: DigitalOcean has a well-established and active community with extensive documentation, tutorials, and community contributions. Civo, on the other hand, has a smaller community but offers personalized support and assistance to its users.

In summary, Civo offers more flexible pricing, lacks native managed Kubernetes services and load balancer offerings, has a smaller global presence, but provides S3-compatible object storage. DigitalOcean, on the other hand, offers fixed monthly pricing, managed Kubernetes services, load balancers, a wider global presence, and a larger community with extensive documentation.

Amazon EC2Amazon EC2DigitalOceanDigitalOcean

DigitalOcean was where I began; its USD5/month is extremely competitive and the overall experience as highly user-friendly.

However, their offerings were lacking and integrating with other resources I had on AWS was getting more costly (due to transfer costs on AWS). Eventually I moved the entire project off DO's Droplets and onto AWS's EC2.

One may initially find the cost (w/o free tier) and interface of AWS daunting however with good planning you can achieve highly cost-efficient systems with savings plans, spot instances, etcetera.

Do not dive into AWS head-first! Seriously, don't. Stand back and read pricing documentation thoroughly. You can, not to the fault of AWS, easily go way overbudget. Your first action upon getting your AWS account should be to set up billing alarms for estimated and current bill totals.
