8base vs Firebase: What are the differences?

  1. Serverless Infrastructure: Firebase provides serverless infrastructure that allows developers to build and scale applications without having to manage servers. It provides features like authentication, real-time database, and cloud functions. 8base, on the other hand, also offers serverless infrastructure but with additional capabilities such as a GraphQL API server, workflows, and visual data modeling.

  2. Data Modeling and Relationships: Firebase offers a NoSQL real-time database that is schema-less, allowing for flexible data storage and retrieval. However, managing complex relationships between data entities can be challenging. 8base provides a visual data modeling tool that allows developers to define complex relationships between data and enforce data validation rules.

  3. Authentication: Firebase offers authentication services out of the box, supporting popular authentication methods like email/password, social media login, and phone number authentication. 8base also provides authentication services but with the added advantage of using the same authentication system for both frontend and backend API access.

  4. Custom Business Logic: Firebase allows developers to write serverless functions using Firebase Cloud Functions to execute custom business logic. However, the development experience can be cumbersome when dealing with complex logic and dependencies. 8base offers a more streamlined experience with its built-in serverless functions that can be written using JavaScript or TypeScript and can easily integrate with other 8base services.

  5. Performance and Scalability: Firebase provides a highly scalable infrastructure with built-in CDN and global edge networks, allowing for fast and scalable application deployments. 8base offers similar scalability benefits but also provides advanced caching and CDN integration options to further optimize performance.

  6. Pricing and Flexibility: Firebase offers a flexible pricing model with a generous free tier but can become expensive as usage increases. 8base provides a usage-based pricing model that allows developers to pay only for what they use, providing more cost control and flexibility.

In Summary, 8base offers a more comprehensive and flexible development experience compared to Firebase, providing a visual data modeling tool, advanced authentication capabilities, streamlined custom business logic, enhanced performance options, and more flexible pricing.

Socket.IOSocket.IO

We are starting to work on a web-based platform aiming to connect artists (clients) and professional freelancers (service providers). In-app, timeline-based, real-time communication between users (& storing it), file transfers, and push notifications are essential core features. We are considering using Node.js, ExpressJS, React, MongoDB stack with Socket.IO & Apollo, or maybe using Real-Time Database and functionalities of Firebase.

I would recommend looking hard into Firebase for this project, especially if you do not have dedicated full-stack or backend members on your team.

The real time database, as you mentioned, is a great option, but I would also look into Firestore. Similar to RTDB, it adds more functions and some cool methods as well. Also, another great thing about Firebase is you have easy access to storage and dead simple auth as well.

Node.js Express MongoDB Socket.IO and Apollo are great technologies as well, and may be the better option if you do not wish to cede as much control to third parties in your application.

Overall, I say if you wish to focus more time developing your React application instead of other parts of your stack, Firebase is a great way to do that.

    What is 8base?

A cloud service designed to power enterprise-grade web and mobile applications that require support for large numbers of users, complex data and transactional requirements, comprehensive role-based security and a modern look-and-feel.

    What is Firebase?

Firebase is a cloud service designed to power real-time, collaborative applications. Simply add the Firebase library to your application to gain access to a shared data structure; any changes you make to that data are automatically synchronized with the Firebase cloud and with other clients within milliseconds.
